Big Grin New Area For Fun & Games

Hi All...

We have had a number of members contact us about the fun thread type games here on the site and many asked for a special area for them so it is much easier.

Well, here you go! A place for the special game type thread that members may come up with. We will move the other thread on the site into this area so it will be a one stop shop for your fun and games.

We hope to also add old arcade type games to the site where you can try to out do each other to be the "top dog".

Thanks All! Enjoy!

Is a quick spell check needed on the forum name?

Edit Forget that. It seems to have changed while I was posting.

I wonder how this will affect Doug's Member Posting Statistics Report.

Everytime a new forum is created someone thinks it's a bad idea.

And every time a new forum isn't created someone thinks it's a bad idea, too.
Let's not forget, this new forum was created as a result of comments from members.

Seems only fair to hear counterpoints. Even if nothing changes, venting is part of the healing process.

Yeah, I just remember the uproar over creating the TV Talk forum, and that one has been a great move.

And the uproar of the Meets forum, while not as 'successful' as the TV Talk Forum in terms of acceptance, I still think it scratches an itch we had and was a good move.

I can remember people requesting a Game Forum here for a looooong time.

You'll just never been able to please everyone, management doesn't do something people want and they get criticized. Management does do something people want, and they get criticized.

Must be fun to be Bott.

But I agree that it's good to hear all the sides to the issue, helps customize the change and make it work in the best way possible for the members.

Can I ask why posts aren't counted on this forum?

It can't be a "saving space" issue, considering the threads DO take up space.

Were people really complaining about these "games" racking up other people's post counts?

I don't know who the complainers are or what the specific complaints were about but I'd be surprised if they were about post counts.

I'd guess something more along the lines of overcrowding the Happy Hour forum. (And you can argue until the end of time whether the HH was the place for them or not)

I'd just as soon get rid of post counts entirely, always have been in favor of that.

I love the idea of a games forum. But I hate the idea of moving long-time threads here. It's just going to kill the feeling of community that was in them.

That said, either eliminate them entirely, or keep them.

But to come up with inconsistent rules about which threads belong here and which don't, which warrant postcounting and which don't, is a really shortsighted mistake IMHO.

Yeah, I'm contemplating leaving, too.

I bet my question up above won't get a serious answer, either. (No offense, BryanMC. )

If postcounts matter THAT much to people, I could generate a replacement for them inclusive of posts in this forum pretty easily.

Its not the post count. Its the fact that a few people didn't like the longer thread so they got moved. That's not a good reason to move them. Just don't read that thread. There's plenty of threads I don't read. Its quite easy.

I have no idea why people are so hung up on post count...about the only time it makes a difference is when someone makes a comment that is out of line or just plain stupid...you look at the post count and if it's low, you give the person a pass and let them know the rules...

but you can get the same idea from the join date...

Once again, it's not about post-count. It's about being relagated to a place that isn't a part of the "bigger and more frequented" community.

Because "others" were complaining is what makes it the real kicker. And like many posters have said elsewhere, if there's other threads I particularly don't like in Happy Hour, I just don't click on them instead of crying about 'em.

Some people are just weak-minded, and feel most comfortable insisting they're being excluded from some "cool kids" clique.

(And if there's a "cool kids" clique here, of all places, then I'm a monkey's uncle.)

If you use subscriptions, then it doesn't really matter if a popular thread becomes "never-ending" and gets moved. You'll still see it in your control panel. But I really wonder what fraction of threads on the first page of the HH are this sort of thread.

I truly don't get the post count shenanigans though. Post count is post count. It is a record of how many posts you've made. Deciding that some aren't worth counting, or taking them off the count if they've been moved to the archive is silly. Either have them or don't have them. This business of counting some posts and not others is judgemental and insulting.

(And any effort to actually generate our own accurate post counts as dswallow suggested would certainly increase the load on the server...)

This may be true, but I don't understand what it has to do with the new area...

Apparently some folks didn't like seeing the "never ending threads" cluttering up their efficient view of the Happy Hour and all it's scholarly glory.

I contend they just felt intimidated by long-standing conversations in which they felt unwelcome.

"These threads are frivolous, I tell you! Banish them! I have limited real estate on my 10" monitor, and my eyeballs simply aren't capable of skimming over titles that don't interest me!"

In this case, it seems that the squeaky (complaining) wheel got the grease.
