DirecTV introducing new DVR tomorrow (Monday)

DirecTV introducing new DVR tomorrow
Posted Oct 9, 2005, 2:42 PM ET by Peter Rojas

It’s the day TiVo hoped would never come: tomorrow DirecTV is launching a $30 million advertising campaign to introduce its new in-house digital video recorder, the R15 DirecTV Plus DVR. The DVR, which should be available before the end of the month, will be able to record up to 100 hours of programming and will cost $5.99 a month (which is the same as what they’re charging for DirecTV with TiVo); a version capable of recording HDTV should be available sometime in the middle of next year.

You’ll still be able to get DirecTV with TiVo until an agreement between the two companies runs out in early 2007, but DirecTV has already stopped all marketing TiVo to its subscribers (if you want it, you have to ask) and will almost certainly do their damnedest to convince as many people as possible to sign up for their DVR rather than for TiVo’s (dropping the monthly price a bit would probably help). This doesn’t by any means spell the end of TiVo. DirecTV users account for only a small percentage of the company’s overall revenue — they’re only making about a buck a month off of every DirecTV with TiVo subscribe, which is way less than they’re making from standalone subscribers — but this arrangement did help them pump up their subcriber base in a pretty significant way. They better hope their deal with Comcast gets rolling right quick.

/me hugs his two DTivos.
I'll only be getting one of these after they break and I have exhausted all other means of getting another.

Just tell them that if you don't get a tivo then you'll cancel the service. They have to sell it to you, it's in their contract.

I'm thinking that TiVo needs to roll out an ad campaign of their own touting the advantages of a REAL TiVo. I can see people calling up and ordering the DirecTV DVR thinking they're getting a TiVo based on their friends etc, and they get an R15 instead. When things don't work like they've been told, they'll take out their anger against TiVo because they won't know any difference.

Maybe we will get lucky and have the option for the SA TiVo features that are currently not officially offered on the DirecTiVo's after the contract ends. I would consider paying TiVo directly for those features if offered.

I never thought I'd leave D*, but I may very well become a Comcast customer when they roll out their Tivo boxes. Unless this thing just blows Tivo out of the water. Which historically, no one has been able to do yet.

Is there a reason why tivo cannot continue to build a direct tv tivo? They did it with the series ones.

My house, no Tivo, no directv. Period.

I will NEVER go back to Comcast, but Verizon has just installed FIOS lines in my complex. Time will tell.

SBC was installing fiber optic cable all least week on my block; their cable offerings are coming soon. If the R15 doesn't match the Tivo units, and right now it doesn't, I'm back to Adelphia with the Moxi box (which comes closer) or I'll see what SBC has to offer.

New Coke, Edsel, R15...hope that extra dollar a month doesn't burn a hole in Rupert's pocket!

The saddest part is, many people just would not know the difference unless it was pointed out side by side. I think it is possible that many of the people that care already have a TiVo of some kind.

If it doesn't have 30-second skip, it's just a hard drive in a box.

So they start the campaign, about 4 weeks before shipments are going to be available?

Odd.... It wasn't in the BestBuy ads for this week...

Thats big companies for you: 1 hand doesn't talk to the other...

Let's advertise the heck out of this thing... but we don't have them ready to ship yet...
So... "They are out of stock due to high demand...."

Well, it may be that they start selling them directly first, then they'll reach retail.. just a guess anyway..

If you can't switch between 2 buffered tuners, its just another hard drive in a box.

That would be a first... As far back as I could remember, all the products where retail first... then about 3-6 months later, direct sales from DTV.

Tha'ts the real deal breaker for me. Not being able to buffer both tuners at the same time is just plain stupid.

goes to show you how often I order direct from D*.. i.e. I always buy retail. That probably blows my guess out of the water then..

I'm curious when DirecTV's web site will change to talk about their DVR. Currently, the "DIRECTV DVR" pages still show the peanut remote and occasionally refer to TiVo.

Ya lets go ahead and publicly slam the new equipment of someone who gives us over 2 million dollars a month. That makes a ton of business sense.

Given that the deal is in effect until February 2007 and D* will probably not renew, why the hell not. It can't hurt TiVo to do this and maybe get them some new customers via their deal with Comcast.

And rolling over and taking it as they phase you out of that $2M/month does?

I'll never understand the emphasis some put on this little feature. I have it enabled, but never use it...

I'd much rather hit FFx2 and play when I see the show come on. With 30second skip I can skip 20-30 seconds into the return which can potentially cause the missing/spoiling of a plot point, etc.

Plus, while loathe most commercials, especially during football, many times glossing over commercials also causes me to miss programming ads for shows/events I may actually want to see...at least with FF I can say "hey wait, what was that" and back up...

Agreed. I activated 30-second skip once, played with it for maybe a minute or two, and turned it back off. Never played with it since. 2xFF works quite well for me.

Now, if anyone came up with a *true* commercial skip...wow. Press a button, skip to the beginning of the show's return. Now that'd be "hot"....

Where did you read that Jim? If you can't perform something that simple I would agree.

See the R15 in October Thread
Or the
I played with the R15 for three hours.

It was stated by a couple people that have seen or played with the beta units.
