"The Comeback"- HBO 6/5 premiere

Anyone hear any advance buzz on this show? I'm not a big Lisa Kudrow fan but I usually give HBO the benefit of the doubt.

Just saw this review on tv guide:

The delightful Lisa Kudrow is not a one-show wonder like Valerie Cherish, the pathetically delusional C-grade sitcom has-been she plays in HBO's painfully obvious satire The Comeback (Sundays at 9:30 pm/ET). The series takes shots at easy targets: reality TV and lousy sitcoms. Preening before reality cameras as she lands a role on a pandering youth sitcom, then finding out that she's been downgraded from a lead to dowdy "Aunt Sassy," the needy Valerie undergoes endless and not particularly amusing or original humiliations. Neither of her shows (reality or sitcom) is anything I'd want to come back to, or care about, each week.

It's just another runofthemill tvguide review. Takes up space and tells you nothing. (They've been going downhill for a few years now)

I'm tivoing the first one just to check it out.

Brilliant show. Very painful at times to watch and spot on.

I didn't get much out of it. I imagine I will give it another chance but after that it will probably slowly roll of my tivo.

My biggest issue right now is they can't keep this reality show thing up the whole time. If they do the show is doomed. It is okay for small doses but to have it be the way the show is delivered is horrible. There is a reason why they edit reality shows.

They really need to scrap that as the primary story telling device and just use it sporadically.

All that being said, there were a few funny moments in the show.

Found it pretty hard to get into the show, I'll keep the SP for a couple more times - and maybe give the premiere another watch later.

It was ok. I think they are going for a christopher guest kind of feel to it, but they aren't clever enough so far to pull it off. We'll see how it goes in the future.

I do enjoy the parts where she tells the documentary supervisor to do something and then she agrees.

I agree with you on the "painful to watch" aspect. Not a lot of funny moments, but I like that they are trying something different.

I totally agree that this show was ABSOLUTELY SLOW. I TiVo'd Entourage (love Ari - I'd say hug it out, but I dont want you drawing wood" - Love that line last nite!) and then figured I'd give it a shot. Well after watching a while I said to myself how long is this show, thinking possibly 60 mins. I hit play on my TiVo and I kid you not, I was ONLY 9 MINS in.

I found this show utterly unredeemable.

I pray that HBO decides to let this die the stillborn death it deserves.

I found it slow in the beginning, but picked up fairly quickly during the "shooting the pilot scenes."

I have a feeling now that we're past the set-up part of the show, that the rest of the episodes will seem much better.

I kinda like the humor; part Office in its painfulness and Arrested Development-y with its camerawork (though it doesn't pull it off quite as successfully as the aforementioned shows).

I'll be giving the rest of the first season a shot.

I didn't love it, but didn't hate it either - I'll be continuing to watch to see which direction things go. It was at least entertaining enough to keep my interest for the whole show.

Don't pray too hard, because I really liked it. I thought the idea of showing what would happen if the reality TV cameras were always left on was brilliant. It did have some slow moments, but on the whole, I thought it was very interesting and amusing. What I really wish would be them taking all that "raw" footage we saw, and then showing an edited version of what would have been the real, reality TV show. You know, with her husband's bathroom stuff left out, with music, with cute moments.. (All within the context of the show, of course.)

My SP stays.

Oh its HBO. I guarantee at least two seasons.

Not that I recall but have they ever had a show which the average person though was bad and then they killed it in the first season? I can't think of one, but I am curious.

They sure went for a wide range of ages for the actress to play the "Room and Bored" character:

Marilu Henner: 53
Kim Fields: 36
Lisa Kudrow: 41

I guess she wants to "play her age" after a decade of playing 7-8 years younger...

I tried to watch, but we had some kind of intermittent audio problems that made following the story impossible. I was hoping for a kind of Larry Sanders does Big Brother, and I do love Lisa Kudrow, but this didn't look like it was any of that. My husband flat out said it was awful after 3 minutes. It was pretty painfully slow, plodding, zero set-up. I switched it off when I realised I wasn't going to be able to follow the episode due to the sound problems, but I will give it another chance.

Due to conflicts, I didn't record the show on its original air date. Instead, I recorded it off HBO2 at 1am Monday (I think). Anyway, it ended where she hit the car in front of her and the man started yelling at her. What happened afterwards?
I didn't think the show was all that bad. It does give you an idea of how many takes it may take to deliver a single line. And when she acts too over the top and asks them not to use it, you can bet that's the one they'll use. I'll bet this sort of thing has really happened to her, and many other actors, and that there is a grain of truth to a lot of the stuff on this show.

Basically: She goes home and finds out the pipe leakage her maid was talking about occurred at her "It" wall. As she mourns the damage, she gets a call from one of the other actors saying they got picked up and they're on the fall schedule. Then she proceeds calling other people, telling them that she's got another show.

I LOVED this!

I love 'uncomfortable' comedy and Lisa Kudrow and any show about 'the industry'. So I guess it's right up my alley.

I haven't yet watched this week's Entourage (another 'industry' show) so I don't know how I feel in comparison. Reviews have said that this season is funnier than last (which I liked). Reviews also pretty much hated "Comeback" but I loved it.

I really liked "Jimmy"'s cameos too. Him pointing "No" to the reality cameras? Classic!

"But do you have a Juicy Ass?"

Finally got around to watching it, and I thought it was a snooze fest. REALLY a show about nothing! Won't set a season pass for this one. All the more reason to spend my summer catching up movies I've recorded over time and the few shows I really wanted to see (Into the West and The 4400 in particular). I'm starting to think that HBO is believing they can have a new series about ANYTHING, even if it stinks. They've had quite a few clunkers lately. But the saving grace is for every three or four clunkers, we get something like Deadwood, or Carnivale, which are truly interesting as well as different.

Ummmm...I didn't realize it was Lisa Kudrow until the end. I'm the most unobservant person on this planet.

I liked it.

It's so deeply inside, it's hard to believe anybody outside the industry could enjoy it.

Count me in on the hated it side. The guest has-been celebs being vulgar just reminded me of Fat Actress. It is not that I found it objectionable, or really bad -- I just didn't find it anything. 30 minutes of nothing except one naked girl.
