After switching to Vonage my internal modem had trouble completing calls (even with ",#034" etc), and using a 14400 external eats too many of my vonage minutes (I'm on the cheap plan). So I've hacked my already capacity-upgraded Series One for tivobin, tivowebplus, tivoftpd, and ppp, connecting to a linux PC that I have always-on via a Linksys WRT54g to cable modem service.
I have made always-on ppp work using lots of good info from this forum and other web resources. I can also get the daily call completed, using dial prefix ",#211", but only if I first disable the pppd connection so that it can initiate a new connection cleanly.
Question is: is it not possible to have both an always-on serial ppp connection, and the daily call over that serial connection? I don't really want to spend money on a turbonet/tivonet/airnet card given that I have all the components working that seem required. . . . Have I just missed a way to trigger only the IP portion of the daily download, without it setting up a new PPP connection each time?
(Seems like a FAQ, but I have looked around enough to make the rest of it work and haven't seen this specifically referenced in any of the forums/sites.)
Yes, set the dial prefix to,#401, as if it had an etherent onnection
I had hoped that was the answer and tried that (seems obvious that that would just launch the IP side of the request) but it didn't seem to work. In fact I think it hung indefinitely on the "dialing" state and I had to reboot from the shell.
I'll try again - have to pull the harddrive to re-enable always-on ppp.
