Why Copy Protect CNET Downloads?

I have watched a couple of the CNET downloads, and for a gadget nut like me, they are GREAT!! But why are they protected from being transferred off the box? They are basically commercials for CNET and the products. Who wants to restrict distribution of commercials? Doesn't make sense to me, but maybe somebody at CNET can explain why they would be harmed if I made some copies of their program.

I can kind of see why they don't want me to download it to my PC. I could convert it to an mpg and post it on the web. But to not even allow MRV, let me watch it on the upstairs Tivo, seems overly paranoid.

Maybe TiVo is paying CNET to provide this programming. If so, then it makes some sense to copy protect it. However, if CNET is doing as a way to promote their excellent website, then I'd think they'd have no problem with wide distribution of the video.

Maybe TiVo is offering this service as a way of attracting people to TiVo, and having the content freely available would short-circuit that. Long term, that makes some sense, but in the short run, giving people the ability to distribute promotional material AT THEIR OWN EXPENSE seems like a no brainer to me, but what do I know.

The offer showed up as a promo in the TiVo Central menu on most boxes. The DVD units have it as an entry in Showcases.

What's funny is that at least some of those C|Net video reviews are already freely available online... For instance, the review of the Vizio P50HDM plasma TV can be found at:

http://reviews.cnet.com/Televisions...1-6475_7-0.html

I'm willing to bet most of the videos are there...

Protected against multi-room viewing ???

I signed up for CNET downloads on the tivo in my basement that I use to record shows (the one that has it's own satellite receiver to keep tivo from switching my main satellite channel out from under me) , and then tried to watch one on my main tivo, only to find out that I couldn't watch on a different tivo, due to some kind of copy protection within my own house! What are they protecting against?

I deleted the CNETs unwatched (I'm not going to sit in my basement & watch them) and killed the subscription. I don't think that I'll try any other "special features"...

What good is multi-room viewing, if this copy protection stupidity is used?

Hey Tivo - wake up & remember your roots in "ease of use"!!!!

Yeah, it made no sense to me either.... plus, it bugged me that it didn't have any CC.

But I did like the content and the presentation. It would be a great monthly or bi-weekly feature.

It was probably used to make sure the Copy Protection worked properly and nobody could bypass it. I suspect they've been monitoring forums such as this to check this was not the case.
Quite honestly, if they do crap like this and prevent me from transferring stuff within my own network, I'll have to seriously reconsider TiVo as a service. Copyright Content be damned.
