Question Why does DTivo dial up all the time?

I never watch pay-per-view channels, yet my DirecTivo units (DVR39 and HR10) seem to dial out every few days. If the guide information comes in via satellite, what sort of communication is going on with the dial-up modem?

Another question I have is regarding software updates. Do the DirecTivo units get their software updates from the modem or from the satellite?

I'm not sure what other communication is going on during the call. All of my DirecTiVos have no phone line connected.

My understanding is that the updates come down via the sat, but the update is set to initiate during the phone call.

TiVo calls in to upload your watching data. They sell this. How do you think they know which commericals are the most watched in the SuperBowl and such.

Also DirecTV units (including DTiVo) call into DTV every so often.

Typ SW update is triggered by a phone call.

Calls used to be everyday, but now its every 2 or 3 days.

I remember at one point my D* Tivo was calling like a mad man multiple times per day. Do the amount of calls at all relate to the amount of season passes you have or shows you have recording per day? I'm guessing it would be all lumped up into that one phone call?
