Apt.

But more conceptually, Wagon Train in space.

The viper and its associated effects were Star Wars driven. Also the use of off-the-shelf plastic models shot ultra-close up and enlivened by computerized camera movement. More fundamentally, though, its roots were Star Trek.

I thought the original BSG was great. It's easy to look at it now and poke holes in it, but I could do the same with each and every SF show from the 60s & 70s, including Star Trek TOS. By today's standard they ALL sucked. And the fact that they had to rip off BSG to create the current version shows that someone else thought it was good too, or at the very least popular enough to remake.

I will say that BSG-1980 totally stunk.

Moore has said that they are careful to be duly respectful of the original, partly because "many" of the production staff "loved" the original seres.

I liked the old show. I just picked up the DVD set a few weeks ago. I know it was cheesey, but it was one of my favorites when I was a kid

I even bought a colonial viper jacket (like the one on the show) when I was a kid....hides because of the shame

I'm waiting for season 2 to come to DVD. No way I was going to watch BSG on my HDTV in SD. I know a DVD isn't true HD, but at least it's anamorphic.

Yup. There's more info on Dykstra at http://www.imageworks.com/company/bios/jdykstra.html.

I enjoyed BSG TOS when it was on in reruns MANY years ago and still somewhat enjoy it today. I can see why some fans of TOS really dislike TNS since Moore has changed SO much, seemingly at random (many of the changes still bother me). Hence, there's the joke that TNS is GINO: Galactica In Name Only.

I agree that Galactica 1980 was awful. I'd heard about it but hadn't seen any of the eps until a few years ago.

So, Ive worked my way through Season 2, through the 2 part Home episode, where they find the tomb, etc.

Boy, it sure is a grim series. Really good though. However, Im going to have to watch Season 1, because Season 2 appears, up to now, to be a continaution of Season 1.

You really should have watched S1 first. I liked it even better than the first half of S2. The mini series was great!

Definitely start with the mini-series. I tried to start with Ep 1 of Season 1 (33) but was totally confused. Watching the MS made everything make sense.

Just watched the episode Pegasus where Adama meets the Battlestar Pegasus and get into a conflict.

OH MY GOD. That was an extremely powerful episode. Extremely hard to watch. The best one in Season 2 so far, IMO.

They sure picked a hell of an episode to leave off until January though.

Yes, they sure did leave us hanging in anticipation. I can't wait until January to pick up where it left off. I made sure that I moved that episode to DVD so that I can watch it again the day before BSG resumes.

Regarding season one, I agree with the others who suggested watching the mini-series first. It was an awesome experience to watch the mini-series for the first time right after watching season two, discovering how all these events began and how all the characters fit into place.

And then when I finally was able to watch season one, having watched the mini-series first brought so much more depth to it all. I think BSG is the best show on television.

BY the way, the version of "Pegasus" that is on next week's DVD set is the TV edit. The extended version with the extra 15 minutes will appear on the second half DVD set.

Most of Season 2 will re-air this Tuesday (12/20). A great refresher opportunity before the series resumes in January.

I'm glad I opted for the 140 hr TiVo (around 40 hours capacity of Best Quality recordings). It's great for these Sci-Fi marathon days.

Ridiculous! Wouldn't it be better for us to see it before the continuation??

Dude, seriously-why would you even watch Season 2 before Season 1? Did you watch Lord of the Rings out of order? Do you read the last chapter of a book out of order?

Actually, yeah. Doesnt dimish my enjoyment at all. I wanted to get in step with the current happenings, and then do the backstory. I didnt, however, expect Season 2 to be a direct continuation of Season 1. I wouldnt have viewed it first probably if I had known.

Anyway, I just got the miniseries and Season 2. Watched Pt 1 of the miniseries today. Awesome stuff

I like how there is no "good" or "bad" sides. The realativly good people are flawed, the bad people have good inclinations etc. There is no black and white. Even the Cylons cant be viewed as the "bad side", at least not totally.

Quite refreshing compared to the traditional flawless hero.

Lovin it!

I'm not sure if you're being serious or sarcastic here; but either way, some of the parallels can be drawn a bit closer:

SW - Small band of rebels on the run from the Empire
BSG - Small band of survivors on the run from the Cylons

SW - Hero is an earnest but naive farmboy
BSG - Hero is an earnest but naive politician's son

SW - Hero's sidekick is a lovable rogue smuggler
BSG - Hero's sidekick is a lovable rogue fighter pilot

SW - Villains (henchmen) are robot-like stormtroopers
BSG - Villains (henchmen) are actual robots

SW - Head Villain is a Jedi who betrayed his friends and turned to the Dark Side
BSG- Head Villain is a Human who betrayed humanity and went over to the Cylons

As long as they stick to earth. I didn't like the whole "Searcher" business.

all that parallels if the prequels didnt round out the star wars saga. they change it all, as in the hero part, who is the hero now? me thinks yoda.

Yes, but when the original BSG aired, all we had seen so far was Eps. 4.
