Assistance with upgraded Tivo, please

Hi - This evening, I attempted to upgrade my DirecTivo RCA DVR40 to a 120 GB hard drive. I used mfsbackup and mfsrestore (with -x) with no errors. Now, with the large hard drive in, following the "Welcome" screen, I get to a screen that just flickers. When I put the original HD in, everything works fine.

The new drive is set to "master" and the cables look ok.

Anyone have any ideas?

Thanks!

You probably need to redo the backup and restore with the correct parameters. -f 9999 6so I think?

Thanks. I did that, on my first and second attempts. The 3rd attempt, I tried the "mfsbackup -Tao - /dev/hda /dev/hdb | mfsrestore -s 127 -xzpi - /dev/hdc" to make an exact copy. It too said it completed successfully, but it still won't boot.

Thanks again for replying. Hopefully, we'll figure it out...

One quick note, I don't have 2 hard drives, in my unit, so I modified the above disks accordingly.

All - Thanks - I managed to locate the original backup image from the Tivo (no hacks) and applied that. The system boots. I'm in the process of running through everything again.

Are you setting the jumper on the new drive the same as the old drive?

Was the original drive jumpered to master, or CS (cable select)?

Data cable is correct, red stripe toward the power plug?

New drive is spinning?

Ok, that's all the basic stuff. It looks like your's is a Series 2 DTiVo? So the correct mfsbackup should be the -f 9999 -6so /mnt/dos etc.

Is that one of the ones you tried? Where are you writing the backup file?

I applied the hacks, and the system still boots! Wish I new what caused the original problem, though.

Thanks again.

When copying the whole disk try dd with dma enabled then let it boot fully once then expand it using mfsadd or TivoMad. I've had occasional problems like yours and sometimes have to take the long route to save the recordings.
