Just got around to finishing this last night. I enjoyed the main event. Raymer's run was impressive - I'd be interested to know how many players have finished in the top 1% multiple times. Some of the old-timers who have made multiple final tables did it when the field was around 100 or so. Not to minimize their accomplishments, just curious. I'm sure the minimum skill level in those days was much higher than it is now; I assume it was open to anyone willing to put up the buy-in, but guessing people just didn't go if they didn't have the skills and experience to back it up.

I would have loved to see Dannenmann win. I guess Hachem was just an average Joe too, but he came off a lot more like a slick pro-type player (not that he wasn't likable) than Dannenmann. I was disappointed in his final hand though, I agree that he didn't make the adjustment to heads-up very well. If I were his friend who put up the money, I don't think I'd have taken half. Beyond a certain point, $100,000 or so, I think Steve more than earned a bigger share. He played great, I don't recall him getting especially lucky - I think I would have just said I'll take 10%. Of course, if I were Steve, I'd probably feel compelled to stick with the original deal.

Is the TOC on ESPN? I didn't know about it until I read this thread today, but it wasn't in the upcoming episodes of "2005 WSOP."

The TOC isn't called "2005 WSOP", it's Called World Series Of Poker Championship I believe.

It's in the guide data now.

If by "average Joe" you mean "amateur," Hachem's a pro. Not that his results were stellar:

Oh, I guess the story about his wife staying home with the kids while he went to Vegas, plus Chad talking about he and Dannenmann both being CPAs (or whatever, same occupation) made me think otherwise.

The Tourney of Champions is on this Saturday at 1 pm, I believe. My World Series of Poker Season Pass caught it.

Spoiler Alert! (highlight to read)
Hellmuth, Corkins and The Mouth as the final three and the verbal fireworks are in full force

Now THAT was a final table. Great play, not a lot of "well, lets just see if I win a coin flip", skilled reads and bluffs. I gotta wonder (hope?) Mike has gotten himself on some medication for the obvious Manic Depression. :P

They even mentioned that Mike blew all the money he won from the WSOP Final betting sports and online poker. Real head case... But, always entertaining to watch.

I was surprised when Dannenmann went off on Hellmuth.

WSOP is my favorite of the poker shows. Counter to a lot of the views I read, I like the high story/card format. Lots of fun.

Small world. Danneman did my taxes for 3 years about 5 or 6 years ago. He's from my current hometown of Severn, MD. I watched his final hand and thought he sort of blew it. I didn't get to catch his verbal assault on Hellmuth but read it in the local paper.

My only brush with "celebrity". Wow.

1. ESPN and Probably ESPN 2
2. I would be surprised if it is repeated less than 10 times before end of January.

The cool thing is, if i'm ever at the same table as Matusow, I can ask him if his mom gave him his computer back. Maybe that'll shut him up.

I really, really doubt it. Although I'd recommend for maximum effect using the term "Mommy" instead of "Mom" tho.
