Jukebox app - released

Hi all,

Decided to go for it and release this. This is an application that treats your music collection like a jukebox. Each time you select a track (or album) it gets added to the current playlist - that loops when the end is reached.

About the application
==============================
A jukebox server application based on the various examples that came with HME
Provides a playlist based jukebox with the following features:

- navigate through your music collection
- album art icons if album art exists (checks for folder.jpg in the folder)
- looping playlist
- add any track to current playlist
- add any album to the current playlist
- clear playlist

Remote Shortcut Keys:
- info : help screen
- Advance : next track
- Clear : reset playlist
- Enter : add selected album/track to playlist
- PiP : exit app
- pause : pause/resume track
- play : resume track
- reverse : back a track

I need more posts before I can post the URL for the download....

Last edited by steveybaby535 : 02-25-2005 at 09:24 PM. Reason: added shortcut key

Very tasty indeed.

Got it running without a whole lot of trouble.

Two issues:

1) I have my music collection on a NAS server that doesn't yield the directories in sorted order. Therefore, the music directory list from your application is in roughly chronological order. Any chance you could manually sort the list?

2) I have some folders with "folder.jpg" rather than "Folder.jpg". I get hideous errors trying to add tunes with little "f" folder.jpg:

Oh, but in case this wasn't clear:

I've been totally waiting for an app like this, and I think it's totally cool.

Thanks for the feedback - more please!

I've fixed the two bugs you reported, plus another one with the album art.

Re-uploaded to same location, just replace jukebox.jar from the new download.

Cheers,

Steve

hm....can someone help me understand my error?

I update the runme.bat to reference my paths for bananas and hme jars:

set classpath=%classpath%;"C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\My Documents\tivo\hme\bananas_ea1\bananas.jar";"C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\My Documents\tivo\hme\Audio Player\jukebox.jar";"C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\My Documents\tivo\hme\Audio Player\helliker.jar";"C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\My Documents\tivo\hme\hme_sdk_ea1\hme.jar";
java com.tivo.hme.sdk.Factory com.sharpers.tivo.hme.jukebox.Music "C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\My Documents\My Music"

I still get :
Exception in thread "main" java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError: com/tivo/hme/sdk/Factory

Any ideas?

Thanks,
Jeff

Jeff,

Looks like your classpath doesnt include hme.jar, double check that "C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\My Documents\tivo\hme\hme_sdk_ea1\hme.jar" exists.

Cheers,

Maybe your classpath is too long - I believe there is a limit to work around this use the old 8.3 trick...which means, turn:

"program files" into "progra~1"
"documents and settings" into "docume~1"

Which would mean you should use:

set classpath=%classpath%;"C:\docume~1\Administrator\mydocu~1\tivo\hme\bananas_ea1\bana nas.jar";"C:\docume~1\Administrator\mydocu~1\tivo\hme\audiop~1\jukebox .jar";"C:\docume~1\Administrator\mydocu~1\tivo\hme\audiop~1\hellike r.jar";"C:\docume~1\Administrator\mydocu~1\tivo\hme\hme_sdk_ea1\hme. jar";

Let me know how it works out....

Getting closer...

I'm getting there...and perhaps learning something!

Using the bananas example, I modified the bat file and added a new environment variable for bananas (HME_BAN). It now reads:
java -cp "%HME_HOME%\hme.jar;%HME_BAN%\bananas.jar;jukebox.jar;" com.tivo.hme.sdk.Factory com.sharpers.tivo.hme.jukebox.Music "C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\My Documents\My Music"

The app seems to run just fine. I can browse my music collection - looks great!

But I can't get any music to actually play. Here's what Im seeing:
The path seems to add extra elements to the path for some reason (e.g. C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\My Documents\My Music\My Documents\My Music\Dave Matthews Band\Busted Stuff\Dave Matthews Band - Busted Stuff - Big Eyed Fish.mp3) - an extra "my documents\my music".

Any thoughts???
Thanks,
Jeff

Hey there - I think there was a bug in that version - which could be worked around by playing music by pressing "enter" when the track/album is selected.

HOWEVER, I think ive fixed the bug - so could you redownload - same location as before - and let me know if this fixes your problem.

Cheers

Tunes.....

Steve,
The latest version works! Very nice app, especially the use of artwork. Hopefully my notes helped in building an install script or instructions. A view of playlist would be an obvious next addition (I'm sure you're all over this).
Thanks again for sharing....your player will certainly be used.

Yeah - sorry Daniel - working on getting this to be a java web start app - which will take a lot of the pain away

For now, extract the zip to your harddrive and follow the instructions in readme.txt

It doesn't need to be a web start. I did download everything and unzipped it. When I double click jukebox.jar I get

Failed to load Main-Class manifest attribute from C:\download\tivo\Tivo Jukebox\jukebox.jar

No - I dont know how to set the manifest to call the tivo Factory class. Anyone here know how to do that?

Until I find out how, I suggest you stop double clicking on it and run it by following the instructions in the readme.

New version available!

Spent a few hours on this today. Now I have an integrated playlist editor!

Just press the thumbs up button to access the editor and then use thumbs up and thumbs down to move tracks around. The currently playing track gets marked on this screen too.

You can download the latest version from here:

http://www.sharpers.com/hmeapps/jukebox.zip

Enjoy!

Very nice...this IS my current music app for the TiVo. Excellent use of the info button!

A couple suggestions:
1) If there is any way to use the track number as the default basis for adding songs within an album to the playlist, use it.
2) Top level navigation would be nice
- View Playlist
- Browse Music
3) The playlist might benefit from including the artist (without going to a detail page)
4) Display the album art while playing tracks

Again, very nice.

Thanks for the kind feedback Guys.

Jeff - good suggestions - im not sure what the first one means though - are songs being added alphabetically instead of in track order? The top level navigation was already in plan - hopefully with more than two options on it . Ill add the artist to the playlist, good idea. I have a few ideas about what to display while the tracks are playing.....You'll have to wait and see for that one.

#1 - It looks like tracks are added based on track number but instead of evaluating the number, it is treated like a string. As such "11" comes before "2".

Looking forward to your next release.

As for me...I've got my idea - I just need to learn some more java to implement it!

It also only functions correctly if you have all your MP3's separated into albums with correct track #'s in the ID3 tag. I have a bunch of misc MP3's in a folder with 0 as a track number and they show up all wacked out ("0 - Track Name" is listed but if you hit "info" button a different song all together is shown.) It is basically treating the "Misc" folder as an "album"

Hey Reno,

Thanks for the feedback. My music collection is all sorted into albums and has ID3 tags - so I guess im the lucky one!

Just to make sure I understand your requirement - would the following work:

- if the app detects that more than one album is specified within the ID tags of the files within a specific folder, then treat this folder as a "misc" folder

- if any track numbers are "0" treat folder as a "misc" folder

- for "misc" folders, dont output track numbers, append the artist to the track listing

Would this work for your collection?

I'm in the same boat with my misc folder, and this would help a lot. The only thing I can think to add is to look for AlbumName.jpg instead of folder.jpg.

The second and third suggestion would work but not the first because all of my "misc" MP3's have "<Unknown>" as the "Album".

Excellent...it's very fast scrolling compared to HMO. I've been using it and encountered a few items and have some suggestions:

- The integrated play list is very nice. I noticed that it does not update the "(now playing)" when the song changes (by advancing manually or song ending). You have to exit and enter for that to appear.

- I occasionally get a "Connection reset by peer: socket write error" on the PC command window and the Music App no longer shows on the TiVo. I've even had the TiVo reboot spontaneously while I'm navigating the Jukebox windows.

- I wasn't sure if there was a way to delete a track from the playlist. Besides moving around, that would be nice.

- It would be great if the playlist could be saved as a file on the PC (in some playlist format) for playing later - either within this or through HMO)

Thanks!
-J

Interesting - have you been able to pinpoint a certain function that is being performed when the Tivo reboots and you get this message?
