Not a total noobie at this, but it has been awhile. I added a new hard drive to my Series 1 back in 2000. The local good guys was closing up shop and I found a TCD140060 Series 2 that had a lifetime subscription on it. So I picked it up and hooked it up at home. Everything seemed to be running well. That was 2 weeks ago. For some reason my progam info isn't updating. It updated the first time I connected because the box had been unused for quite awhile, and I was able to get new shows programed in. The box makes the phone calls fine and says it succeds, but I only have 4 days of data left. I called TiVO and they told me that my box was hacked at one point and a 90 gig drive was added since this should be a 60 hour unit. My software is stuck at 4.0.1-01-2-130. The guy at TiVo said the box won't update the program data until it first upgrades the system. He said the system won't update because whoever hacked the drive did something wrong and TiVo can't access certain areas to update. What am I to do? Any suggestions would be helpful. Thanks in advance.
go to ptvupgrade.com and grab an instantcake image for your unit. It's a bootable Cd that will return it to factory fresh status.
The cost is 20 bucks.
Your recordings will be lost, and you will have to go thru guided setup again, but the lifetime status will not be affected.
I was looking into doing that. Just 2 questions on that though. What version will the instant cake sytem make my box (I imagine the most recent), and is it possible that the guy hacked it to make it a lifetime subscription and once I do the instantcake the lifetime subscription will go away? Don't want to spend $20 to get an unsubscibed box. Thanks for the input.
I'd call Tivo and verify the lifetime sub is legit just to make sure, but I'm not aware of any hack that will make a tivo THINK it has a lifetime sub.
I think the instantcake versions are 5.xx but the box will update itself to the latest 7.x.
I got the instantcake and loaded it. Downloaded update and the system got to 7.2, but with no program data. When I connected again I got an so3 error and it kept going in this loop of trying to connect. So i did the instantcake again then did a clear all data and it's been at that for 2 hours. does it normally take that long, it says "this will take 1 hour".
Got it for $20 plus tax and the $30 for the instantcake, they charged an extra 9.99 since it was a big download. All in all not a bad deal. I also got a Replay with lifetime for $45, but it had a bad drive ($80) I had to replace. After I got it up and running I didn't really like the interface so I sold it to my neighbor for $125 to break even. I also grabbed 5 Humax 80 hours for $15 each. None of them have lifetime though. I got some smokin deals when good guys went away. Sorry to see them go, it was a nice place to shop.
