Note Serenity Shindig - Potluck Planning!

I'm starting this thread so that we can get a list going of which of the locals folks are bringing what food to the Potluck dinner for the Serenity Shindig. StanSimmons just dropped off a BUTTLOAD (and yes, we weighed it... full buttload) of beverages... everything under the rainbow you can imagine, and thensome.

But now that beverages are covered, we need to talk food.

The 'rents and I were talking, and Clan Skittles is going to try to cover the "big" items... we were thinking either barbecue (get some brisket/chicken from a local BBQ place, and pick up some buns and Texas Toast)... or perhaps some sandwich platters. Of course, suggestions are welcome. For our non-carnivores, I'll make sure you guys have some suitable alternatives to suit your vegetarianism.

So, locals.... time to show off your cooking skills. Who's bringing what? Right now, we've got around 25 people on the attendee list, so hopefully we'll get a nice mishmesh of foods going.

For the out of towners, I was kinda hoping we could show off some of our Texas hospitality and bring enough food to make sure they didn't have to. Seeing as almost all of them don't have cars, or kitchens, or ovens... it'll be hard for them to whip up a dish.

I'll keep a list here. Please post and let me know what you're bringing. I don't want to end up with 20 bowls of potato salad. *wink*

Food & drink list

Skittles: Big Ticket Item, to be determined.
StanSimmons: Buttload of soda and water
BSNelson and TFMB: Banana Pudding
mwhip: Assortment of desserts and/or a cake.
MNoelH: Deliciously delectable desserts
pantess: Venison chili
TIVO_GUY_HERE: mexican cheese dip
Samsara: chips, salsa, and nibbly bits
Bryanmc: Baked beans
Smeek: Potato Salad
martinp13: Veggie Trays & Dip
spelcheker: Rick Bayless' Tomatillo/Garlic salsa, Alton Brown's '3 chips for Sister Marsha' chocolate chip cookies, and chips

THE THINGS WE NEED:

- Cole Slaw
- Snacks for folks to nibble on throughout the night.

Is there a really good bakery or something similar that I can swing by to pick something up to bring?

HFC, someone would have to be insane to ask you to add anything at all to that giant list.

So I'll just call dibs on the two Vanilla Cokes. That's plenty for me.

If people won't freak at the thought of chili in the summertime, I could make some of that. I've been told I can crank out a fairly decent bowl (it's got beans; tough sh!t, purists! it's also quite hot, just have milk handy).

My wife, I've been told, can crank out some pretty passable banana pudding. We could bring some of that.

I know I chimed in earlier with a flavor request, but I wouldn't mind a splenda flavor being available. I've starting drinking those lately, and I seem to like them better than aspertame diet drinks. Either Coke or Pepsi. Doesn't matter.

And, of course, only if it's not too inconvenient.

Oh yeah, and thanks again for doing this.

Looks like plenty of diet drinks on the list... good, good... very good.

I've never heard of "Diet Cherry Vanilla Dr. Pepper." I must try some, even though I'm not big on either cherry, vanilla or Diet Dr. Pepper drinks seperately. A drink with that name just demands to be consumed.

There'll be some Diet Coke with Splenda available, if you're OK with that. I'll probably grab a few 12 packs the week beforehand, just in the extremely unlikely event Stan's missed anything.

Y'all out of town folks really don't have to go and bring anything.... you guys are spending enough money on airfare and hotel.

That said... there aren't any really good bakeries nearby. But, there is an Atlanta Bread Company about 2 blocks down from the hotel, and they make an INSANE Oreo Cheesecake.

Whoever said her banana pudding is "passable" is on crack. I hate banna pudding as a general rule, but love TFMB's banana pudding.

I'm not staying at the Richardson, so I'll check to see if I can find anything around where I am staying. If I can find something I'll bring it, othewise, I won't stress about it.

Hey, Skittles. Is Corsicana on my way? Or is it north of Dallas? I can't remember. But I do know that they have the most fabulous bakery in all of Texas. We used to stop and get pies there on out way Oklahoma City for holidays.

Not sure... My knowledge of Texas exists strictly in Dallas, Houston, and Austin, and the latter two are woefully vague enough as it is.

Any of the other locals know?

Must be the one at Coit and LBJ, then.

Don't sweat it, Ebenezer. You guys are doing enough with buying airline tickets and getting hotel rooms. The last thing I want is for you guys to feel like you have to stop somewhere and grab something. There are a BUNCH of locals coming, and hopefully we can all pull together and get a really awesome potluck spread.

This is Texas, chili is a must, even if you do taint it with beans.

Corsicana is definitely on I-45 just south of Dallas, so you're sure to see it on your way up.
