R15/New Drive

Has anyone tried dropping in a new drive to see if the R15 will set it up the OS the way other non-TiVo DVR's do?

I don't believe anyone's tried yet.

I think Lee said he'll try this weekend.

You might find a larger sample of users here.

I don't think it's been tried yet though.

We anxiously await your findings, Lee!

FYI for lorick and other members reading this thread, we've been asked to stop posting information and discussions about non-TiVo DVRs, including the R15. Earl is moving the R15 review to DBSForums. We should continue this discussion there.

Here are my findings: so I took out the 160GB R-15 HD and instilled a 200GB HD I pluged the unit in and it said Hello, your directv receiver is starting up then it when to almost there a few more secondes please then the screen when black ( as it always does) so I left it there for 20min came back and it was still the same and i looked in back of the R-15 and the fan was not spinning.

So as far as i can see you can not upgrade the HD by your self.

With TiVo, wasn't there some issue with using a drive larger than 160GB? Maybe the R-15 OS has a similar issue. Anyone got a 80, 120, or another 160 GB drive to try? Just curious if it can't handle a driver larger than 160GB.

And yes, that would be too bad if it isn't as easy as upgrading the UTV or old DISHplayer units.

BTW: Didn't UTV and DISHplayer require a dial in to format the drive? Lee was your phone line connected?

Hmmm, I know Earl said he'd be going to both places, but I thought the last I heard DBSForums was going to be the predominant site. Dan even made him a mod over there.

I'll update my macro to point to both places until it's settled.

Thanks!

Hi, Mike.

The phone line wasn't needed for the format, but once formatted it had to dial out to download the software.

The "home" of the FAQ is going to be DBSForums.com

But the discussion is welcome (as is on going) at both www.dbstalk.com and www.dbsforums.com

That was LBA48 issue.. (more of a limitation of the particular "edition" of Linux they where using as an OS).

I would have to think, that since it supports the 160gb, that it is running a LBA48 (or better) version of the Linux core.... Thus it would support some seriously large drives (can't remember what the theoretical limit was, but it WAY up there... much larger then any single drive solution on the drawing board)
