HD Question

I know this is a real newbie question:

I recently got a Samsung HD TV and the Comcast 3412 HD DVR box.

Sometimes, on the HD channels, the picture is in the 4:3 format and it looks like an HD broadcast (ie the picture looks like HD). Is there and intermediate HD format (on the HD channels) that only shows in 4:3? I know the settings on the cable box and TV are ok - I do receive "regular" HD content in 16:9.

Thanks,

Art

What you're probably seeing is a regular (SD) program. But since it's broadcast on a digital channel it still looks better than regular SD. It also looks better simply because the picture is smaller. Just watch the same show on a 60" TV and then watch it on a 19" TV. The 19" will look terrific in comparison.

It's also possible, that you are indeed seeing an HD broadcast where your local station didn't flip the HD switch.

What you're probably seeing is standard definition programming that has been "up-converted" at the station end, and transmitted in digital quality. It will look much sharper than you are used to seeing standard def programming look, but it's not high definition.

Two reasons it's going to look sharper: it's in digital, rather than analog; also, because the upconversion is being done at the station end, they are working with higher quality and higher resolution source than if you were to do the up-conversion at your end.

So, in other words - if it's not 16:9 - it's not HD - it's something else.

Thank you.
