Question about HME and DTivos

Yes I know it doesn't exist.
Here's an interesting question though.
is there any reason Tivo couldn't release it to us so we could at least run Galleon? Those of us with hacked units can already access HMO and it's features.
I'd gladly pay for a download from Tivo.com and ftp the required patch code to my unit.
I think it's truely SAD that DTV has hamstrung this awesome platform the way they did. I mean they have their own DVR now and obviously aren't going to develop the Tivo based units any further. I imagine many of us would pay for such options if they were made available to us.

Releasing software without DIRECTV's approval is not an option for anyone providing DIRECTV hardware. DIRECTV has the final say on what is made available.

Pony,
Thanks for answering. I guess this will hold true even if/when tivo and DTV truely contracturally part company?

We'll see what happens should we ever cross that bridge.

But yes, it is in DIRECTV's interest to control what equipment connects to their service, and I don't expect that you'll ever see software updates offered from anyone other than DIRECTV. Just my personal guess.

I have seen plenty of software updates not provided by DirecTV. (And not provided by Tivo either...) It's really a joke when a bunch of hackers have to make products work better than the manufacturer is willing to do.
