150 character sigs

I tried to add something to my signature last week, and got an error because my sig was longer than 150 characters. (Technically it wasn't, but VB code was counted in the character limit, so that put me over.) Fine, no big deal, I'll take it out. I hate long sigs anyway. (I had them turned off completely until last week.)

But it just occurred to me, after reading a few threads, that there are people with signs MUCH longer than 150 characters. Some sigs link to 5 or 6 different threads, and each link has to be at least 50 characters long. So, how do they get away with that? Is there a trick to making long sigs, that I haven't figured out yet? Or is this a recent rule change and everybody else is grandfathered in?

(Sorry if I'm coming across as bitter. I'm not at all, I'm just curious.)

The trick is to be grandfathered in with a longer signature; we can't change it without being subject to the new size restrictions though, so it's not like we're grandfathered with the ability to keep changing to a new long signature.

People with those longer sigs are "grandfathered" in from before the limit was changed to 150 characters. If they ever change their sigs though they'll have the new limit applied.

Beaten to the draw! Glad this wasn't a pistol duel.

I think the last software update kicked in that rule. Anybody who already had more than that in their sig was left alone. But, any new ones got that message. I believe. I could be wrong.

Exactly.

I used to have 6 or 7 vanity quotes with links that I couldn't edit once we switched to VBulletin 3, otherwise I'd lose them.

I'm so close to the limit that I can't even add [size=1] around my sig to make it smaller.

You could...
make a point
to the powers that be
by making a sig
that looks like this.
I'm sure
we can self-govern
our own sigs
and be reasonable
and that sometimes
155 might be okay.
It's about gawdy
or annoying,
not some magic number.

...or a nice simple one like mine.

And the person could loose the right to use the sig at all.

BTW, Your modestly-sized signature looks to be about 193 characters...

150 is bad? Nah, I can deal. I can definitely see the need to limit. Be thankful pics aren't allowed here. In my car forum, you can put your pic in your sig. People don't know how to shrink down 10000x10000 pics and it takes forever to read some threads on my 56K. Also imagine all post hogs, i mean, frequent posters, that would have their pictures repeated on each and every reply in a thread. it's insane i tell you! So I can deal with this law and order on this board.

PS thanks for updating me about the 150 thing, now I know to never change my sig and lose all that valuable real estate.

Oh, yeah, don't get me wrong, I prefer the limit. I hate long sigs, and that's why I've had them turned off for so long. I just was noticing that some sigs were over the limit, is all.

Sony T60- 243 hours, 2-160s (I replaced a 1 yr old bad 80 gig Western Digital HD with a WD 160 that failed in 2 months so that's it for WD for me!)
Sony B65 - now that interactive is gone, the box just isn't the same

I'm retiring my 216 count sig today and wanted to give it a proper burial. I have too much new equipment to waste my allotment on old WD drives lol.
