Can anything be done about the spell checker?

As an avid bad spellar and very paranoid about this, I rely on the spell checker even if I just post 'LOL'.

The checker here is horrible. It couldn't find a correct spelling for 'acomplish'. I left out one freakin' 'c' for Pete's sake.

Anyway, what are the options to get a better one? If it costs something, I'd be happy to put some money towards it.

Thanks!

Hi...

It is not a feature of the software and was installed as a add on hack. Vb does not even provide a spell check. Their is one other, but it is even worse than this one. (if you can believe that.)

Here are some plug-uns' you may like...

Firefox... http://spellbound.sourceforge.net/install

IE... http://www.iespell.com/

With these...you RIGHT CLICK on the text window and click spelling. Good news is, it will work for any website in any text box.

I'll have to check those. I am a bad typist and the spellcheck here (and most other sites does not even even correct 'teh' to 'the'. I just figured maybe it though it was correct it gest used so much.

You have to love a spell checker that doesn't know "I'm" or "I'd" but does know "neurosurgery".

(Oh, and one that displays "no suggestions" if you manage to correct the spelling of a word. After all it is spelled correctly, so there is nothing to suggest Of course the fact that is does that if you drop a letter from the work makes that a bit less useful )

I thought the "learn" option would help it learn specific words that it does not know - especially TCF specific words (along with some it just doesn't know). I don't know how many times it has told me "I'm" is misspelled and I clicked "learn" - I'm sure others have too. This feature must be disabled, or it takes thousands of "learn" clicks before it actually learns the word.

If the "learn" feature would work, the spell checker would be much more useful.

The problem is it would also have to unlearn... If someone clicked "Add" to say, "Ooopps" then the spell checker would no longer pick up on that mizpeling. My wife works at a hospidal, and they have a lot of words that get picked up by the spell cheqeur... They're computer is shared, and peeple ghet into a rythem of clicking "add" and will acidnetally add wrong words all the time...

The Google Toolbar also has a spell check function...

That sort of thing could be avoided if it required the word to be learned by 100 times. Then you would get a lot of the weird stuff, but would get something that really needs to be learned.

Spellbound is excellent. Multiple dictionaries available and you can use it for web email too - I never use site based spell check anymore. There is also the advantage that you keep your own customizable dictionary and add words you use frequently.

You have good reason to be paranoid, with all the spelling police/nazis we have here, who for for some reason take pleasure in pointing out others' spelling mistakes.

I must agree - the inability to detect (or learn) "I'm" is annoying (sigh), but the checker did improve with the "phpSpell" checker.
