Why are my threads not marking as read?

Weird thing...I've been using the "go to the first new post" button from the main thread list for a long time.

But recently, it's been some of the threads marking as read, but for the most part, they aren't.

What could be causing this?

Have you been keeping your browser window open for a long time (not necessarily the window with TC open, but just any instance of the browser)?

This ultimately leads to an overflow of the cookie that they use to keep track of the timestamp each thread was last read. Once it overflows, it can't add any new thread info to it, but only update what's there. This ends up looking like it's not keeping track of info about which threads you've read or where you last read up to.

To fix this, you need to close all instances of the browser and then reopen it, or go remove the cookie under "tivocommunity.com" that's named "tcthread_lastview"... easy enough to do with Firefox, but with IE you'll probably just need to close all instances of the browser and then ensure iexplore.exe isn't running, then start it up again.

This bug has existed for ages in vBulletin (and I've reported it here, too), and the authors seem to know it, and they've replaced the mechanism they use to store cookies several times, but each time they ultimately seem to ignore the fact they're not addressing the problem, just changing it.

It's the "Turn off the freakin' computer and go outside" code.

LOL...I am sorry...but that was a funny line. I feel like that myself for I am on a cruise ship posting this.
