Thumbs up Red Trousers - TiVo Advanced Screening

You may have read about the CNET content that's coming...here's another opportunity to try out broadband video via your TiVo DVR:

http://research.tivo.com/redtrousers/

If you're a fan of Hong Kong action films, you'll want to see this. Even if you aren't...there's some pretty cool stuff in here. Check it out.

Enjoy!

Very cool. I'm a fan of Asian action films of all sorts so this will be a welcome distraction come Thanksgiving weekend.

I'm a fan of the spice channel films.

Will there be any of these available to download in the future?

Kick ass! Feature length is good. Free is good. Public trials are good too.

This is the first feature film on TiVo's download service. Hopefully there will be many more in the near future. Great job TiVo.

I'm not a big fan of foreign films, but I'm signing up anyway just to see how well this whole system works. Plus who knows I might actually enjoy it.

I'm not Pony, but I can tell you on the main TiVo screen there is a menu item to opt-in. (I posted some pics yesterday on my site.)

This is where "spam" is a good thing. I read CNET daily and wish I could get CNET TV like they show in Best Buy. These CNET videos will be fantastic. I'm looking forward to the martial arts movie as well.

TivoPony, what are the ways to get these downloads/features?

Only if it happens to show up as a menu item on your tivo?
and
Only if you register it at the link you provided?

I would like the CNET vids but didnt get the menu option...wondering if there is a link to sign up...

and if you can talk, when this feature is fully out there, will i be choosing items from my tivo, or building a queue online kind of like netflix?

I just noticed our bedroom TiVo (Toshiba SD-H400) does not have the CNET option under the main menu. I also peeked in Showcases to see if it was hidden and didn't find it there either. I forced a connection and it didn't show. Both units are running 7.2.1. Hmmm, wonder if it's an oversight, technical issue, or a staggered release?

The CNET thing is in the menu of your TiVo. However there seems to be something that's preventing it from showing up on DVD-RW TiVos.

This movie can only be requested via the website TiVoPony linked to in his original post.

I have the Humax DVD TiVo and don't have the CNET option. I also didn't get the Army/Navy stuff. Definitely something to be fixed. I wanted to see at least how that looked.

Would be nice if it is available to TiVo Basic too. Hey, I know TiVo is losing money with Basic. But TIVo eventually want to charge / get paid for it, right? TiVo Basic can do pay-per-download and TiVo Basic consumers can widen TiVo's customer base for paid ads.

TiVo isn't going to add features to the Basic version. Otherwise there would be less incentive for users to upgrade.

Very cool. I wonder if the CNET and the Red Trouser this will show up in the "To Do list". I think feature length is great and being able to initiate from the web is a great step forward.

Seems like lots of little pieces coming together.

Of course a holy grail would be able to manage and integrate a download queue from a web page.

yes sir, that is exactly the benefit of all this - and then Yahoo and any other search engines that join in as the "Guide data" to find media to populate that queue with

There have been a few questions about this, so I did want to confirm that the Series2 DVD units (Pioneer, Toshiba, Humax) will not have an option for the CNET Product Reviews.

However, you DVD owners are not entirely left out -- you can definitely visit the Red Trousers signup page that Pony listed above.

Enjoy!

Best regards,
Stephen

Can you expand on this? Why would you not want DVD owners to get these reviews? Why make owners of the DVD units "second-class" Tivo owners?

They're not second class, and we certainly didn't intend that to be the impression. This is another in a series of tests, and not every test will go to every subscriber/platform. In any case, Stephen's comment may be better phrased as "for now"...the team is considering adding the DVD units to the CNET test (we know you guys would like them).

No promises, but if it can be done we'll have more info sometime next week.

Cheers,
Pony
