80 gig drive = variable 71 hours?

I have done some work on my tivo and in the system info it says the space is a variable 71 hours. But it seems that after filling with 20 hours of programming it starts to delete things - has anyone seen this before?

Yes. That is up to 71 hrs, depending on the bitrate DirecTV encodes the recordings at. If you are recording a lit of high bitrate programming, that would reduce that estimate significantly.

If this is a Directv unit there is no way the bitrate is going to be so high that 20 hours of programming eats up the 80gb drive.

Is the unit a SA Tivo?

Sorry, not sure what SA means. It is a directv unit sd-dvr40 (was anyway) and I was getting this much recording time from the previous drive, I believe it was 40 gig.

Would DirecTv be using less compression becuase of the bigger drive? How much space should an hour of programming use?

"Sorry, not sure what SA means" SA is stand alone tivo meaning not a directivo.

Your sd-dvr40 is not a SA .

Do have your SPs set up to "keep at most x episodes" or are they set to "keep at most all episodes"? The default setting is to only keep 5 episodes before it starts deleting the oldest one when it records a new one no matter how much space is available on the hard drive.

Well this tivo does not have that option on it. I can not adjust the quality of the recordings. I do have 3 items, 1 hour duration each saved but still. Something does not seem right.

I ran IC on this directv tivo.
