That looks promising as a birthday present for a friend - if I could work out how to buy it. Am I going nuts, or is there no link to anything from that page, not even to buy it?

Is it worth the risk?

More accurately, you have to go to one of their stores early enough on Thursday morning to get one before the ebayers snap them all up, and hope that it's a store where the manager doesn't have more mates who want one than they've got in stock.

You believe this to be a one-off deal, then, and they won't have more?

Aldi specials are always snapped up in a few minutes on the first day.

The PC I bought from Aldi on Monday http://www.medion.co.uk/flash/md8800/ is still available.

That's not a weekly special.

How does one know this PVR is a "weekly special"?

(Later) They have a really crap web site! I've managed to navigate back to the home page, and then forward again to the rest of the "special buys" section. Nowhere can I see anything that explains how to buy the stuff they are advertising, except the "where to find us" link at the bottom of the page. And that tells me my post code doesn't exist, so they can't tell me my local store. Nothing I can see there explains that these "special buys" are for a day or a week (or whatever) only. You wonder what the point of the web site is, if it's only communicating information to people who already know it.

I think they believe most people are familar with how these German cheapo stores work by now. You keep an eye out for their specials, which are advertised heavily in advance in store. Those who do their main shop in Waitrose may not be totally au fait with them I guess!

They are strange to us Waitrose shoppers.

No credit cards and free carrier bags I can understand on cost grounds but no baskets?

Their web site last week seemed to give the impression that the pc was a weekly offer.

I expect that some products (like the PC) are profitable, and will remain as long as they are still selling a significant number. However, their really cheap specials (like the PVR) may be loss leaders to get you into the shop, and will have very limited stocks.

I was hoping that nobody had spotted the deal, or would have the bad sense to start this thread - before I had a chance to buy a couple.

I see. I've never heard of them before - from your "main shop" comment I assume they do groceries as well, then? I don't really do a "main shop" at all - for the evenings I'm going to need things, I pick it up on the way home from the shop around the corner.

yup, Story goes they were the same chain, then when the father snuffed it / retired (whichever) the 2 sons couldn't agree on how to run it, so split it down the middle.

Trouble with these bargains, is that it can be worse than a xmas sales rush at Harrods, I've seen people queue outside from the early hours for some things, only to find that the shop only had 3 in stock & 2 of those were put aside by the shelf stacker for his mates down the Pub before the doors opened

I think one of them takes credit cards now - saw them trumpeting it on a tv advert - cant remember which one though (maybe both now).

It's worth signing up to the Lidl and Aldi weekly email list - you get list of bargains sent to you the week before.

What is it with German families (specifically brothers) not getting along and setting up different companies?! Adidas/Puma, Aldi/Lidl... any others? Probably just as well really... or it might be world domination in the grocery market

Yes, it's a pile em high sell em cheap food store. Most of the stuff is brought over from Germany, so some of the wurst is worth buying and their beer, being German beer law stuff, is excellent and cheap. Interesting biscuits too. We buy a lot of kids drinks there as it's just about the only lemonade on sale in the UK with just lemon and sugar in it - no aspartame or sacharrin.

Edit: although the postcode thing doesn't seem to work....

It says mine doesn't exist either, or my parents' - so I guess it's kaput.
