My wife watched 80% of a 2 hour figure skating show this weekend. I wanted to delete it to free up some space on our 40hr Tivo but she wanted to keep it to finish watching later. I found myself wishing for a "delete viewed portion" option. This would be especially nice for sporting events that take up lots of space but you only want to watch once. Whatever part of the show is before your current location gets blasted. This way you could rewind and control where the edit would occur.
Maybe instead of making this a menu item, it could instead be a prompt after "Delete Now" is selected.
That would be a pretty cool idea. Perhaps it could break it up into chunks and use the section bars (what are they, 15 minutes apart?) as the points to decide what to delete. If you've watched 16 minutes of a 60 minute program the first 15 would be delted. If you've watched 44 minutes of a 60 min program the first 30 would be deleted since you didn't cross over the 45min boundary yet.
how about being able to edit out the commercials before transferring it to a PC as well? Same concept
Editing tools on a PC are going to be a lot more powerful than anything built into a DVR, so why do it that way? Also, it isn't really the same concept - 'delete viewed' would be a simple cut (and not so simple as that, but relatively) at the point you stopped viewing. Editing out pieces would require the ability to mark start and end points for the cuts, then splicing the leftover bits back into one stream. Possible, sure, but rather a lot more complex.
Simply cutting we know can happen - you can do it now with MRV. You can start a transfer at a paused point, then stop it on the receiving unit. Then you have a chunk of the program. I've done that to keep just one piece of a show.
