Red face USB Ports on DIRECTV DVR R10

I am a newbie (as of this month). Since BestBuy sold the R10 for $99 with a $100 rebate from DIRECTV, how could I resist. Now I see there is this whole great community

Has anybody been able to use the 2 USB ports on the back of the DIRECTV DVR model R10? The manual says that they are for "future use", but a DIRECTV tech hinted that some people may have been able to use them. My fantasy is that I can connect the DVR to my PC and save movies on a DVD, but I know that is asking for it to be way too simple, after reading some of the complicated underground threads.

Should I be posting this on the Underground Thread? I am pretty computer literate, but not very DVR literate, so I thought I'd at least have a chance of understanding a reply on this thread.

Thanks for responding if anyone has been able to use these ports for any connections either to a PC or a DVD recorder.

Happy Holidays!

Unfortunately, the R10 is not that hackable. About all you can do is add another hard drive. The underground thread is the better place to this question. If you do a search on the R10 you'll find all sorts of info about it. There is a R10 review thread by ebonovic on this forum.

The PROM on the R10 isn't hackable, but can be replaced with a hacked version by someone with know how. Once that is done, I believe all available hacks are possible, including activation of the USB ports.

Thanks

Thanks both Jim and John,

I appreciate being pointed in the right direction

I definitely don't want to waste anybody's time with repetition.

This will help me get started using this site effectively and efficiently.

Happy Holidays!

I belive you mean the R10. At this point, there are no known hacks for the R15, and in fact it appears that the hard drive/storage is not upgradable like other NDS DVRs are. So at the moment a R15 is a R15 and nothing more.
