going crazy

I've heard so much stuff i could scream, i Have a tivo made Oct, 12 2005 its a 540040 series 2 or so i think, it may be a 2.5 i hear of, how do i know? what can i do to it?
I have a 200 gig Maxtor i want to put in it, but everytime i find a tut on it. it seems it's for a different model or it is old... there is killdred and tivomad and cake and mfstool ect.. ect.. i dont even know what to believe or where to start, and putting hacks on it is another circus, i hear all about tivo zi**er that does it all for you with hacks but it seems it's for dtv units only...

I hope someone can clear this mess up and point me in the right direction.

Thank You

Edited because someone PM'd me saying i can't say the word zipper after the word tivo it seems odd since a dozen other threads do but ill comply till it gets straitend out...

You simply need to worry about backing up/restoring the with the PTV-Upgrade LBA48 boot CD.

All of the other hacks are pretty well not doable due to PROM kernel protection.

I have mfstools2.iso and instantcake will those work or do i specificly need the PTV upgrade? I would like to backup my original drive to the new 1 if possible just for recordeed stuff, but i will only use 1 drive in the unit the 200 gig maxtor.

and is there a link for the process specific to my unit and tools?

The mfstools ISO is not LBA48, so you cannot use it. It will work, but for only 137GB of the new drive. You want the PTV upgeade CD, as it does the whole drive. Instantant cake is for when you have no backup image, or care not to copy the drive yourself.
