Arrow My Sony Widescreen Laptop Is Not 16:9

While in the shops I noted Panasonic do a digital camera with a native mode of 16:9 - Model DMC-LX1 - £379.00 BTW

You can see a review of the camera at http://www.steves-digicams.com/2005_reviews/lx1.html

Good review but picture not so hot at high ISO

Anyway my issue is with my Sony Widescreen laptop.

Well widescreen it is but not 16:9.
Thus the images show on it with a black bar at bottom and top

The camera takes images at 3840x2160 which divided gives you 1.77
HD TV is 1920x1080 which divided gives you 1.77
My Sony FS VGN-FS115B Laptop is 1280x800 which divided gives you 1.6

Are all widescreen laptops not really 16:9 (which divided is 1.77 BTW) or have I just made a bad choice in a Sony?

Most widescreen laptops are not exactly 16:9, but then again, they don't claim to be either. Most are truly 14.4:9 (1680x1050 and 1280x800), or 15:9 (1280x768, 1750x1050), resulting in small black borderes when viewing true 16x9 material. It's not just your sony.

There may well be exact 16:9 laptops out there, but they're not currently the norm.

Cool, but when you go to buy a Widescreen TV I imagine most people would expect it to be 16:9 to suit the TV format.

Sony in the UK also market some of their widescreen computers with TV tuners in them so I assume these are also not really 16:9

If I had bought one with a TV card in I would be very unhappy to find the TV picture did not fit properly.

Apple's widescreen laptops are the same way. most give you 1.5-1.6 ratio instead of 1.77. No biggie to me but i dont have one so...

Some of Sony's widescreen TVs are 15:9 too.

Now, that is unforgivable.

I wonder which territory uses 15:9?

Russia. They cannot afford 16:9, so they got 15:9 at a discount sale.

Most current WS panels are 16:10, which is a multiple of 5:4, which is what "standard" larger LCD panels are (1280*1024). Apparently it has something to do with yields and getting the best number of pieces out of the large glass (or so says my JVC salesgal).
