Scary stuff in the future for MCE?

Noticed ina technical report on Longhorn, that it will have the ability to implement copy protection by resolution reduction - so a HD DVD (say) could be downscaled than upscaled again before being output, to prevent perfect digital copies.

Sounds horrific to me.

Yes - especially when you see how horrendously MCE 2005 coped with scaling interlaced video. If you hadn't found the registry setting to get rid of the underscan compensation setting we'd all have been saddled with tearing video...

(Let's hope Microsoft manage to get to grips with existing issues - like the disappearing guide data, lack of support for DVB-T audio only services, DVB-T subtitles, DVB-T digital text etc. - before they embark on something new...)

I shall be having one of those.

Seems unlikely we'll get any MCE Extenders now though - why would you buy an extender when an XBox 360 will be cheaper and have better functionality?

Stuart - Ignoring its gaming uses, how would you use one of these?

( Deliberately Vague, Dumb, Question )

I intend to have one (well, several probably) as Media Center Extenders with built in DVD players. (You can't play DVDs over an extender). I'll shift the MCE PC into the study, or server room as it's beoming these days. And probably wire up eTivo to automatically dump all TiVo's Sky recordings onto the MCE PC's My Videos - or possibly build a low spec MCE PC to attach to the Sky box and share Recorded TV with the master PC.

MS have a war on though - have you checked out the specs of the PS 3? 1080p graphics, twin HD displays through HDMI, Bluetooth, 802.11g, a BluRay drive, SD card slot, THREE Gigabit Ethernet ports...

These "games" consoles will significantly outspec my PCs.
