Proposal: TiVo TV Talk podcast

Now that iTunes 4.9 has made Podcasting so much easier, I started shopping for new Podcasts that I was interested in. So far, I haven't been all that excited by what I've found. I generally have the skills to create a podcast and the webspace to store and distribute one. I haven't downloaded and setup Skype yet, but I don't foresee any problems doing that. If you need some examples of PodCasts, there's a number of threads in the Happy Hour forum, including our own "TCF Radio" - Podcast Episode 1 and TC Podcast 2 - The Wraith of Con.

Here's what I'm proposing:
We make and record a weekly Skype conference call discussing the shows from the week that consistently get a thread in TV Talk.
Not everyone watches every show and we certainly aren't going to discuss every show. What I'd like to see happen is we get 3-5 people together on the Skype call with sort of an outline of what we'd talk about and have a couple of people passionate or interested in each of the shows we're discussing. In this way, we'd have different people participating every week and cover more shows. Having the outline and a facilitator should help in keeping the show focussed and reduce a lot of the 'verbal filler' I've been hearing on some podcasts (y'know "like," "uh", "um," and "errr").

For example, I'd love to have Inundated, YCantAngieRead and I talk about the Amazing Race; SparkleMotion, PJO1966 and I talk about JLU; Rob Helmerichs and JYoung about most anything. While I have a general idea of what shows some of you watching if I'm watching the same show, I'd like to start collecting more detailed information about participants' viewing preferences so that we get good matches for discussions.

Since we have the summer premieres of Stargate SG-1, Stargate: Atlantis, and Battlestar Galactica coming up in 2 weeks, I'd like to setup a few test calls between now and then and ultimately invite a few people to participate in the call the Saturday or Sunday after those air.

Sounds pretty cool to me. I'd definitely like to talk about the upcoming SciFi premiers!

Sounds like a cool idea. I'd be in for Rescue Me during the summer. Though, judging from the threads for the first two episodes it seems it doesn't have a lot of people's attention this year.

Lost and 24 would be great for the regular season. Those threads are always huge.

I'd love to talk about TPB and Global Frequency. I'd join Doug in a Rescue Me discussion.

Too bad Enterprise is cancelled. I'd download it just for JYoung's commentaries!

I'd be up for talking about any reality show basically (TAR, Survivor, etc.), I watch them all (except The Bachelor). I'd also be up for talking about Arrested Development, Family Guy, and Scrubs.

Sounds like a great idea to me. I'll be posting TCF Skypecast #3 today, along with the RSS feed for subscriptions. (Waldingrl and I chatted with Gunnyman earlier this week.)

And I'd be happy to help/cooperate with any TV Talk Podcast as well!

I'd be happy to discuss TAR or Survivor. NCIS would be amusing also depending on who they replace Kate with.

Personally, I think it'd be fun to do a BSG Skypecast every week, right after the episode airs. I'm that excited about the show, and think it deserves it.

Ok, let's discuss this a little further.
I'm willing to do the following if someone else wants to facilitate a Skype conference:
I can record the conversation without participating due to a funny Skype limitation that I can explain further if needed.
I can do minor editing, add bumpers, and a couple of other things to get the resulting file consistently formatted.
I can host the mp3 on 13thlevelsupport, since it's not doing anything else for me at the moment.
I can update the RSS feed as appropriate so that we're under the one umbrella feed.

This should remove a lot of the technical obstacles for someone else that might want to do a one-off. It also takes the burden off me to come up with questions for shows I don't watch. I'm setting up my 2nd recording for around August 2 and I've already invited one person and have a couple of other people in mind to ask once I hear back from the first person. We can be weekly and I'm only facilitating half the time or something along those lines. I'd certainly like it to be a community show.

So, let me lay out some guidelines. These certainly aren't hard and fast rules, but I think you'll appreciate being prepared.
1. You may have 4 participants in your Skype call. The possible 5th participant in this case would be my recording account that would only listen and record. Its upto you to invite people and schedule a time when all of us can get together to have the conference call.
2. If you want to use other conferencing software that will record the call, that's fine, I can send you some details about what type of file I would accept, what's possible, what's optimal and what's doable with your skill level. Fofer mentioned the Gizmo Project, but I've not tried their software yet.
3. I recommend you have sufficient questions and material to discuss, set some limits, discuss ahead of time how you will handle introductions and signoffs. If you are discussing multiple shows, try to have some transitional material, an underlying theme or something like that so you don't just make awkward transitions. I can send you the questions I wrote up ahead of time for the first podcast. Basically the only things I edited out of the call were production things I was explaining to the other participants like setting up the signoffs.

I missed this thread the first time around.
I don't get Sci Fi channel (Burn in Hell, Adelphia) so nothing for me until the fall but I'm willing to do:
Scrubs or Smallville.
I'm also willing to take a crack at the David Goyer/Brannon Braga helmed Threshold.

I watch:

Dead Zone (2 weeks behind now)
4400 (1 week behind)
Sci-Fi Friday (I watch on Saturday morning before I even eat breakfast )
Queer as Folk & Six Feet Under (usually by Monday night)

Once the fall season starts up there will be Lost, 24 (January), Smallville, Desp. Housewives...

Now that I think about it, I may be too busy watching all this stuff to talk about it. Have I mentioned that i currently have 7 pages of programming on my TiVo?

I need to look into buying the hardware and downloading the software needed for me to participate. It sounds like fun.

I watch a bunch of shows but I rarely watch them in a timely fashion.

And I don't think I disect them nearly enough for my comments to be worthy of listening to.
