Super NoVa DC: Saturday 12/31 (During the Day)

Are there any plans, ideas, etc, of what to do Saturday during the day before the big shindig?

I know a few people will be helping the Mercs set up, but they can't have everyone helping.

So for those that will be coming in Fri night (or early Sat), and aren't skiing (is that Friday or Saturday? I don't know). Any ideas?

I'd be happy to lead a tour of DC and its monuments, or its nontouristy neighborhoods (although it might be a bit cold for lots of walking).

Thoughts?

Actually, Thursday (at least I hope it is; can't go if not).

Id be interested in the Air and Space annex at Dulles. Didn't make it last time I was in D.C., but this may be the perfectchance, as I think it will be more convenient.

I'd love to see the sights in DC.

Weather and munchkin cooperation level not withstanding

I suggested some things here and in the next page or so we talked about a few other options, but the discussion petered out -- probably it was too early in the process. Now is a great time to bring it up. (TB has much better timing than I do!)

Previous suggestions were:

From me:

Museums
Old Town Alexandria
Georgetown
Washington Monument
Capitol Tour with Inept Tour Guide (me)
Apple Store
Dave & Buster's (in Bethesda, MD)

From merc:

A freezing cold tour of the Bull Run Battlefield
Manassas Mall
Driving Skyline Drive/Blue Ridge Parkway
Luray Caverns (or Skyline Caverns)
Historic Front Royal
NASM Annex
Potomac Mills is nearby for the shopping obesseed as well as the Leesburg Outlets

If there are enough people interested in good old-fashioned DC sightseeing, maybe some TourMobile tickets would be in order. Or just drive by all the sights and stop at a select few that have adequate parking. It will probably be too cold to walk around for hours and hours, especially if anyone brings kids.

This is a big group, so people shouldn't hesitate to break into smaller groups depending on interests.

Others have also suggested Geocaching and HB suggested the roller-rink (and I mentioned a nicer looking one than the one she pointed out).

Manassas Mall? Please tell that was a joke or should I say sacrcasm.
Potomac Mills is nearby? What's your definition of nearby and how big is your car?

Not that I could make the long trip.

Potomac Mills in less than 40 minutes away... Even less depedning on your driving. Manassas Mall was a joke.. is a joke... and will be a joke until they tear it down and start over..

Who am I to determine which of merc's suggestions were for humorous purposes only?

Angie and I have mentioned hitting Fords theater (we are from Lincoln country after all) but had not discussed a time.

If Angie changes her mind I was thinking that I could maybe hit it friday early afternoon. I fly into DCA and could catch the metro. I would just need a place to store my bag.

I'd be up for touristy stuff on Saturday, even the Manasas battlefield if it was not too cold.

I'd be up for going into DC and showing you Ford's theater (and other stuff), however, I do think you'll be disappointed with it

There's Ice Skating near the Sculpture Garden on the National Mall.

Although I'm sure there are closer places than one that is 1 hour away.

Ice Skating

This is where I learned how to skate. Ahhh, those were the days of Friday nite skating in junior high. Always looked forward to the "couples skating" until I fell and my date ran over my pinky finger with the blade of his skate.

There's also outdoor skating at the Reston Town Center.
