does backup take space on old drive?

i just backed up my tivo drive with the drives on the same ide cable. i didnt make a backup to a fat 32 becasue i will be saving my old hard drive. after using this command

mfsbackup -Tao - /dev/hda | mfsrestore -s 127 -r 4 -xzpi - /dev/hdb

will there be a backup on my old drive taking up extra space or did it put the backup onto the new drive and delete it from the old one?

basically does this command put a backup on the old tivo and transfer it to the new, but leave extra files on the old drive?

No, the output of the backup goes to the input of the restore, sort of like copying tape to tape.

Your old drive is now your backup. Put it someplace safe in case you ever need it again.
