Northeast Event Dinner?

After the hot time in D.C, I'm thinking it's definitely time to start a thread on an overdue (and cooler) NE event. My recommendation is for us to have a dinner at the Mohegan Sun in eastern Connecticut. It's fairly central to MA, CT, downstate NY and it's a really nice place to walk around, shop, drink, hangout and even gamble if you're into that) I recommend we consider booking a dinner in one of the interesting restaurants http://www.mohegansun.com/dining/casual_dining.jsp
The Summer Shack has a loft for parties and even has proposed menus online. The Uncas Grill has a private dining room.

I suggest we consider Sat. Oct. 22 or Nov 5. (I ruled out the 29th because I figure many might have hometown Holloween festivities that night).

Comments? Suggestions? Interested?

Do they have group rates, and if so what are they? For me cost is a factor.

Put me down as interested but not committed

I think Foxwoods would probably be a slightly better choice than Mohegan, but either works

Meets involving casinos are always fun. But no way can I make it. I'm getting pretty booked up for TC meets.

sectional? If you are flying commercial providence is probably your best but it probably depends on if its foxwoods or Mohegun sun we are talking about. IJLT I assume you bought your airplane so you are looking for something closer. I believe there is an airport serving Groton/New London

It's not the cost of the meal -- it's the cost of staying overnight.

But if this is just a two-hour drive, I certainly can drive up, have a little fun and dinner, and then drive home again.

yeah, IJLT was talking about flying in himself , so I was trying to help him find something closer.

There is a an airport for Groton/New London. KGON. Is it the most convenient to both Foxwoods and Mohegun? I can't recall exactly where Foxwoods is. I wasn't doing the driving when I went there several years ago.

Looks like KGON would be about the same drive as from Providence. Foxwoods is 10 miles into the woods off 95 at exit 93. Mohegian is a little farther off 95.

I really need a chart. Of course, there doesn't seem to be too many airports in Connecticut to begin with.

Just checked -- looks like a 3-3.5 hour drive for me. I'd have to stay overnight. And the AAA room rate for Saturday, Nov. 5, is $297.

Ouch.

You don't necessarily have to stay at Foxwoods or Mohegan Sun.

Foxwoods and Mohegan Sun are both pretty expensive, but you can stay in the neighboring areas probably for considerably less...I haven't been up there in awhile though.

This is true. I'm still very interested. I just need to see a few more details.

There are a number of hotels right down the road from Foxwoods on Rt. 2 which I'm sure are a lot less then $200+ per night. Also, not sure if this makes a difference, but Foxwoods has a Poker room Mohegian Sun does not.

Not that the casinos are bad but are there any other places that might be interesting to go to?

Or is this a 'take it or leave it' type of deal?

I too would prefer a non-casino venue.

There are quite a few non- casino destinations in the eastern CT area - Mystic seaport and aquarium being the most popular. There's also a very good Native American Museum http://www.pequotmuseum.org/ sponsered by the tribe that runs Foxwoods.

The Mohegan Sun has a couple restaurants that would be fun places for a get together. I haven't been to Foxwoods but I really like the ambiance at Mohegan Sun... as much as any LV casino I've seen.

As for motels, there's a few near Mohegan Sun and plenty in Groton which is only 10miles away.

stevel - you mention that you would prefer a non-casino venue. What type of venue do you have in mind? Although I think you might have to walk through the Casino to get to the restaurants at Mohegan Sun, they are in an area away from any casino activity.

Mystic Ct is about a half hour away, if that... Yes, that is where Mystic Pizza of movie and Pizza fame is at... I stayed around there with my ex a few years ago and that is a good location for those that dont want to do the Casino thing could go... They got the Mystic Seaport I think its called and a few good places to eat and a lot of hotels...

I'll be down for a meet in the Casinos myself! Either or is good, but the one with the Poker Room would be cool!

I just don't like the casino atmosphere - which is usually smoke-filled and noisy, no matter where you go. But if that's where everyone else is, I won't say no.

I've been to both and I haven't found either to be smoke filled, noisey yes, but not smoke filled. You can't have thousands of slot machines without noise.
