Bones 12/13/2005 (S01E09) "The Man in the Fallout Shelter"

This show excels when the story is centered on the interpersonal relationships of the main cast of characters.

And who knew Jack had such a great body underneath those frumpy clothes he's always wearing. Cute shower scene with Zack and Jack, too.

I'd say it was a knock about geeks who obsess over Firefly.

Not that anybody around here is like that!

The Firefly line set up another line later by making us think of JW. Zack: "Be kind, rewind", a reference to Willow.

This was by far the best episode yet. I cannot believe how much this show has turned it around and actually gotten good. Heck, this one was great.

Well, that's a bit of a stretch--mocking "Be kind, rewind" was an ancient tradition long before Joss Whedon grew up...

I also enjoyed this episode, although I think they're moving too quickly to humanize Temperance.

Yep. Full name is Temperance Brennan. Then there's Seely Booth (David Boreanaz), Angela Montenegro, and Zack Addy.

The only characters with "normal" names are Daniel Goodman and Jack Hodgins.

Well, that's not saying much. Christmas episodes usually suck. But this one was good. It took a Christmas ep and kind of turned it, perfectly working in all of the characters and the set into it. And really they're doing an excellent job with humanizing the characters... Even Bones. Which can't come too soon for me (all due respect, gray. ). She is just irritating.

I'm actually liking the show... I'm glad I gave it a chance after the horrible premiere ep.

Hmm...the phrase was originally used by video rental stores in the 80's, and if that was long before Joss grew up, how old was he when he created Buffy? Nine? He must have been writing for Roseanne when he still was in diapers...

My wife caught the quote from Willow and she's a very casual watcher of Buffy, so I do think it was deliberate. It doesn't make much sense if it wasn't-how many people still rent vhs? Anyways, it added to our enjoyment of the show. Peace.

"Seely"? I can see why everyone calls him "Booth"!

Great, I thought Bones WAS Zooey. Well they both look alike. One of the two sisters is in upcoming movie, I saw the preview when I saw the Chronicles of Narnia this weekend.

They need to get Sarah Michelle Gellar on the show.

Does anyone know a good source for looking up the potential literary significance of names? I've seen Seely used as a name once before, but an author who does tend to pick names "on purpose". The word means "silly" which seems to fit.

Clearly Angela is a very deliberate name for that character.

Trying to fit a biblical significance to Zack and Jack (John) doesn't work out too well: Zack was John's father.

I always assumed it was an Seelie/Unseelie reference - In Scots "Seelie" means "Blessed" and the Seelie and Unseelie Courts are the two opposed factions of the fair folk. It was originally (IIRC) from "Saeli", meaning lucky or "well favored". In what language/dialect is "Seely" == "Silly"?

I'm still amazed that Eric Millegan (Zack Addy) is 31 years old in real life. I'm 29 and I look older than he does.

In this ep he had regular clothes on and he looked like a high school senior.

Agree about the character stuff - the main thing that almost made me cancel my SP was that the secondary (lab people) characters were completely ignored in the early (pre-baseball hiatus) episodes. It was as if they thought their forensic anthropology twist on the whole post-CSI procedural crime drama was so unique and original that the show didn't even need any character development. Glad I stuck with it, this episode alone was worth it.

Were we supposed to have any idea why the others might have recognized Angela's dad? Whatever it was went right over my head.

Billy Gibbons is the guitarist for ZZ Top. The 3 foot long beard was the recognizable bit.

Oh, ok. Guess those videos from the 80's are a little older than I realized. Still, they sorta left us hanging as to whether he was playing himself. Imdb just says "Angela's Dad."

I loved the surreal aspect of that bit, and the way they didn't make a big deal out of it. Just expecting us to get it, almost like a throwaway. Really reminded me of Buffy-its something Wheden would have done.
