Men, could you "donate" at a bank?

I saw a jokey post about raising money by making a "donation" to a certain kind of bank that only men can donate to. Could you do that? Or have you?

NTTAWWT, but I just could in no way do this. It would wrack my brain wondering if that donation lead to offspring that I was unaware of.

I would consider it, but I don't know how likely I'd be to actually do it.

It's a tough call. On the one hand you always wonder if you have a child out there somewhere, on the other you give the gift of a child to a couple that can't have one the traditional way.

But to be honest, probably not....

Depends on the money and if they have daily or weekly rates...Since I seem to be having problems lately finding a willing volunteer, maybe I'll try to saturate the market ths way...

As soon as there is a high demand for DNA from overweight, hypertensive, depressed, anxiety-ridden, ADD, underachievers with an unhealthy appetite for stimulants, I'll sign right up. I think. I'm not exactly the profile that potential parents would pick out of a sperm lineup, so I've never had to really consider the question.

Some women find that cute. Seriously.

A couple I met specifically searched for a Jewish donor WITH a history of depression.

I couldn't do it personally, but had a friend who was making regular donations at one for a few months.

I donate all the time, just never to a bank.

I've already got a lengthy list of women who want to be notified if I ever feel like donating. But not planning on it yet.

It's actually pretty tough to get selected. There was an article on the back pages of The Week once about it. You don't just walk in and donate.

Besides, ignoring causal relationships, what depressed person do you know who isn't really, really smart?

I think I could. I have no kids now so maybe my answer would change once if I ever have kids. I'm not sure why it would but maybe it would.

No, I meant, why Jewish?

Seriously though, yeah, I guess that makes sense. The whole "trying to keep the kid more like his parents" thing 'n all. How'd it work out? Is that even a genetic thing? Was the bank able to comply? etc.

They have two kids from donations from the guy. I don't know if they're depressed.

Do babies get depressed?

I have a problem with the second generation of "bank babies." Assuming a donor gives regularly, the chances of him anonymously "fathering" both boys and girls is high. Most of these kids will grow up and remain in the same town, so the chance of half-siblings marrying is > zero. And they would never know.

Pretty amazing how much children change you life, before I had kids I know my answer would have been no problem... need money, make a donation. Now that I have children I don't think I could do that and then wonder about children that were mine out there that I did not know about.

I'd worry too much about if they were treated well and whatnot.

I'd have no problem with this. I know of several people who have had, or are having, incredible difficulty having children so knowing that I might help someone in that situation would be a good feeling.

And it would be kind of cool to get paid to...umm....whatever polite term you can think of that isn't coming to mind for me.
