DIRECTV does not use "Superdish", this is Dishnetwork stuff.

As D5 was already in use with small dishes, you should be able to receive from D5 @ 72.5 with an 18" dish.

If you had bothered to click on the link above, you would have seen we are indeed talking about a Directv "superdish" that is capable of receiving signals from 5 locations, including 72.5.

However, I'd be surprised if we ever see one that can pick up a signal from both 72.5 and 119. That's one hell of an arc!

119 is one of the slots it will pick up, they are 72.5, 95, 101, 110, 119.

Well, perhaps it won't be from 72.5 - 119.

That's what I mean.. That just sounds outragous that it could receive across 46.5 degrees.

Even this massive dish can only reach 40 degrees!

All this is kinda screwy ain't it. Oh well just have to see what happens in the end, I'm fine with a second dish for 72.5 just wonder what will be on all the other satellites.

It belongs to Directv Latin America, it's a KU-FSS slot.

We in the smaller DMA markets appreciate it.

That doesn't seem right. The lastest TLE information shows current position as:

Name DIRECTV 5
Lon 81.6577° W
Lat 0.0073° N
Alt (km) 35632.160
Azm 185.9°
Elv 42.7°
RA 05h 14m 14s
Decl -6° 20' 06"
Range (km) 37417.111
RRt (km/s) -0.001
Vel (km/s) 3.080
Direction Ascending
Eclipse No
MA (phase) 278.9 (198)
Orbit # 854
Mag (illum) ? (44%)

According to this, Directv 5 is still scheduled to arrive at 72.5 on Sept 6 (Labor day).

I called DTV today and the CSR from Customer Retention confirmed they are still "up in the air" on the hardware specs. She acknowledged that a single dish config was being considered. According to her, once the DTV web site states a final hardware config, hardware for new customers and such may be ordered even before your rollout date.

Lyng Sat says that DirecTV 5 is now at 70.74 and it was supposed to be moved to 72.5.

Did they overshoot the parking place?

Lyngsat doesn't report the actual location of the bird, rather it just "guesstimates" the location based on provided data. The same thing happened when Directv 7s was being moved into postion. Lyngsat eventually corrected their error within a couple of days.

There may also be some updates on Thursday here:

The DIRECTV Group presentation at the Morgan Stanley Media Conference

In the past at these conferences- they have made some references to timeframes for 72.5.

Did anyone catch this? I missed it and the replay is not available yet. Seems like we are in another information drought.

What equipment are they going to use? Something like the sat C kit and a second dish?
