moving to 4.0

Not sure is this thread will get whacked or not, but I'm prepared to move to 4.0 on my dsr7000.

Is there anyone who has done this willing to send me a few pointers (yes, I am reading up on the other forum).

Also could you point me to the best threads on the other forum for this info.

I know I'll need to get a hold of an image, I'm sure these are ways to do this as well.

All I want to do is add HMO, and then if directv ever releases the code, I'dd use their version.

(hell for that matter, I'll buy the beer fior someone in DFW that wants to help. heh)

All the info you need is on the other forum. Unfortunately, it cannot be linked to or discussed here. I will say, though, that after a lot of reading, and learning some basic Linux commands, it was very easy to set up 4.0 on my RCA DVR40. Now if it were only as easy to run CAT5 in a 2-story house, I would be in heaven.

Tim

Tim, there seems to be alot of discussion about how this is done, but is there a central place where a howto is spelled out Hinsdale style???
please email me (check my profile) since PM's listing urls get censored too.

Why would it get whacked? DirecTV has announced that DirecTiVo is dead and HMO will not be released on the DirecTiVo. All of us who bought the DirecTiVo before Murdoch bought DirecTV, did so with the understanding that the product would be enhanced and would have the standard TiVo features, we were mislead.

It was clear in the announcement from DirecTV today that they wish to differentiate their product from the TiVo product by offering better and more features and since they are in control of the DirecTiVo product features, then it is clear that DirecTV will not enhance the DirecTiVo, so we are at a dead-end, abandoned.

The only way to continue with the DirecTiVo and DirecTV is to enhance the product by adding version 4. The alternative is to drop DirecTV and the DirecTiVo and go to the standalone TiVo.

If DirecTV really cared, then they would replace our DirecTiVos with their new product at NO COST, but fat chance of that happening. So our investment in the future with DirecTV via DirecTiVo can only be enhanced by placing version 4 on our machines.

I hate to chime in with a me too, but our vendor has left us with out the ability to pay them for an option that is wanted and usable on our "lame duck" platform. So if anyone has a simply to follow process to follow, that they would like to share, for a guy that has been aroung PC's since 1985, I just don't have the Linux background, PM or e-mail me michael_kowalski**nospam**@**nospam**hotmail.com

Hey I want to get in on the instructions too! I know that RID receivers need to be handled a little differently, so I'd prefer those instructions if possible: tivo40@jerw134.endjunk.com

Show me where is says that the product would not be enhanced! Would you buy a name brand computer today, knowing that you would not get the security, feature, and usability upgrades for the OS, just because you bought an HP machine.

It was made clear today, that the reason that DirecTV didn't enhance the DirecTiVo is that they planned to kill the product and relationship, yet they continued to sell the product. In fact, the DirecTV representative made it clear that they really didn't have any plans to continue the relationship with TiVo until the end of contract in 2007. If you want , I can find the report that states that he believed it was a gray area. And based upon all of the contracts that DirecTV has broken since Murdoch bought control, I would not find it impossible for them to break their contract with TiVo after a successful launch of their DVR.

We need to get over it and move on, we have been mislead, maybe not directly, but indirectly. I bought my DirecTiVo pre-Murdoch and I would have bough SA TiVos if I had any idea that this would happen.

Also, understand I have been with DirecTV since 1994, over a decade, and TiVo since 2000, and this year that relationship will be half-a-decade in length.

Also, take note, this is a TiVo forum not a DirecTV forum. TiVo is not to blame for the problem, DirecTV is and if you wish to support DirecTV, then please go to a DirecTV forum.

As for the point of this thread, I took about a week of reading and numerous burned images to finally get it right. I bought a r10 because I wanted the folders and a large hard drive. I have a 300 gig seagate in there now and it runs great. I have a huges box in the bedroom that his hacked with a 120 gig pile of crap that I had laying around for testing purposes. I am running 4.0 with tivowebplus and tytools. I can extract and decode using it and play it in my windvd software on my computer. For some reason I can play files ok on my p3 but my p4 doesn't like to play them correctly.

It was not easy and I had to re-do it a few times but after you get the hang of it you can start to understand it. Now my old Sony SA 1 just sits collecting dust.

As for this whole 2007 thing. It seems that they will more than likely allow for the current users to keep there hardware and let the newbies get there branded DVR. Thats fine and all but I will have to see what can be done with those new units to insure results on the future of my business.

From what I have seen the 7.1 can use all of the goodies that we want and allow for extraction and distribution. That scares D* the most, I think. Anyways if I can get 7.1 to run on my box I will, I think its neet.

I would feel a little jipped if I were a HD tivo user and with the switch to mpeg-4 in the future not being able to use my $1k unit would put a bug up my ass and a sour taste in my mouth.

But who knows........

No, that's not how it works. You're claiming that you were promised something -- it's up to YOU to prove it.

Here's the general instructions 4.0 on a RID box instructions. Regarding Hinsdale, go to www.google.com and type in Hinsdale!

If you attempt them without having spent at least the entire weekend reading up on the different processes (you need to UNDERSTAND the steps), you're in for a world of hurt. If you nuke your unit doing something you don't understand, the standard answer is "use the search button".

It was by association.

Because TiVo (this is a TiVo forum!) always enhanced their products. BTW, do people buy computers not expecting their products to be enhanced, how is the TiVo any different?

Just remember, a number of us feel betrayed! We knew this was coming, but we did not assume that DirecTV would be so upfront with their screw you approach.

Did you buy a product from or supported by Tivo? You expected something that you quite frankly had no reason to expect, and now you're pissed.

And before you can ask, no I don't work for DirecTV.

You mean it was by ASSUMPTION, not association.

You ASSUMED that because the DVR you bought from DirecTV (not TiVo)came with TiVo services that it would be upgraded.

Are you feeling betrayed because you lost the gamble that DTV would add everything you wanted to your $1000 HD DTiVo?

Time for me to start reading. 4.0 going on 4 TIVO directv boxes. So in the end D* wins any ways. I will be staying a D* user but I have to HACK my TIVO directv box.

D* could have made it easier buy doing it for me (for a resonable fee) but guess I am on my own

Thanks a TIVO directv user

I'm going the same route. Hack mode engaged. Nothing like a company treating you like dirt for motivation.

I don't see it as being treated like dirt... at least you have a box you can hack, give a nod to D* for that. If you had Dish Network DVRs you'd be severely limited or have no options at all.

The hackability of the D* DirecTivos will keep me as a D* customer for quite a while.

No, give a nod to Tivo for that.

And MPEG4 will move you from directv DVR with oldy moldy Tivo software from 3 years ago very quickly.

Good bye, good luck, and good rrrrrrrrriddance.

step by step is mentioned in this thread. It is also convoluted and if you DON"T need the RID stuff and use it you will fubar your TiVo.
Sadly nothing as clear as Hinsdale exists for the get 4.0 and HMO on your directivo hacks.

http://nh-gym.com/4xrid.htm comes CLOSE

If you are stupid enough to try and do this stuff on the original Tivo hard drive, you deserve to have a fubar'd Tivo.
