Amtrak Passengers Stranded in Ga. Woods

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20051230...WtkBHNlYwM3MTg-

A trainload of frustrated passengers has been stuck on an Amtrak train stranded in a patch of woods in south Georgia for more than 24 hours.

Amtrak Train 98 has been stalled near Georgia's border with Florida while engineers wait for a derailed CSX freight train to be removed.

Meanwhile, the train's passengers — including many cash-strapped families headed home from vacations — are getting frustrated.

"We're stuck in the woods," said Eleanor Meyer. "People have ran out of money buying food. This is unbelievable. You have to run to different cars because certain cars have run out of toilet paper."

Meyer is trying to return to Poughkeepsie, N.Y., after taking her 19-year-old triplets Katherine, Christine and Janice to their first trip to Orlando, Fla.

"I took this train because I'm afraid of flying," she said. "Right now flying is the only way to go."

Young kids are cranky and scared, she said. The elderly are wondering how their medicine will last longer. And Meyer herself is on the last drops of the medicine treating her nasty cold.

Peter Nicholson of Newtown, Penn., is returning with his wife from a visit to Orlando's theme parks. He said he's lucky he brought books to read during the delay: The mammoth Lord of the Rings trilogy.

But he worries how long the passengers can hold out.

"You wonder how long you have to try to spread out your money and where your food is coming from," he said. "There's nowhere to go if you needed something. If anybody got sick, I don't know what they would do."

The train left Orlando on Thursday around 1 p.m. and was delayed in Jacksonville for roughly 12 hours. After moving for about two hours, it's been held up in a patch of forest outside Savannah.

In all, eight Amtrak trains were affected by the delays, said Amtrak spokesman Cliff Black.

Black said the CSX freight train's derailment came at a "choke point" in the north-south lines that gives trains no chance to pass.

People who can't pay for food will be dealt with on a "case-by-case basis," he said. "For now, there's plenty of food on the train."

"We're hopeful it will get moving very soon," he added.

Back in the woods, passengers scoffed at the train's name, the Meteor.

"It's not a meteor," Meyer said. "But we do need a mediator. We really need to be rescued."

Total BS. They should tend to everyone's needs gratis. It might stave off the impending lawsuits.

Do trains not reverse? Surly they could at least reverse into the nearest station and find other accomodations for the passengers.

Agree - While it isn't Amtrak's fault that the CSX train got derailed, they share the same tracks... so they should treat the passengers to meals (within reason, of course).

Wonder if they are going to need to delay again if they have to resupply or dump their waste load.

Exactly. Nobody should be paying for any food on that train.

Plus, if I remember correctly from my only Amtrak trip, eating on the train ain't cheap.

I can't believe they're still charging for food! That's ridiculous.

And as for "I don't know what they'll do if anyone gets sick", well, if they got sick enough, a hospital would send a helicopter. And, if you don't need a hospital, it's not that bad.

This sucks, and if I were on the train, I'd be pissed - real pissed - but it's hardly a disaster.

I do love the irony though of the people trapped because they were afraid to fly. That's wonderful. Sorry, but it is.

I don't think anyone's making that comparison except for you. I don't think you'd be incredibly happy being stuck on a train in the middle of the woods for 24 hours while paying high prices for food, having to scavange for toilet paper, all while missing work/other commitments.

If I was in that train, I'd start telling scary stories about being lost in the woods.

Then, I'd be the first one they ate.

Anyone else think it's weird that a train stuck in the woods for "more than 24 hours" only hit the news 11 minutes ago? Like, when they were still stranded this morning, since yesterday, that wasn't news yet... "Nah, wait 'till it's been at least 24 hours."

Okay, someone in the office brought up an excellent point. The longer they keep charging for the food, the less food will be consumed, which will, in turn, conserver the dwindling supply of toilet paper.

The one and only time I took a train it sucked hard... The dining car just had microwaveable crap.. A microwave hamburger was 6 bucks.

I can't imagine being stuck on the train. Nothing to read... No internet...

For some reason, I had the thought of a bunch of people stranded in the woods on a train while "Dueling Banjos" plays through the night air.

Maybe someone will send a Wambulance for them. They're making it sound like it's just horrible. So what if they run out of toilet paper. They're stuck IN THE WOODS and the trees have shed their leaves. It's not like they're stuck in the evergreen forest or something. There's also a nasty rumor that some of those stranded have FEET and could do something about the situation other than whine.

I've taken a number of trains over the years with varying levels of service. Some of them do have actual dining cars with prepared food, you know.

I will say this, though...that particular run, when I was on it last (a couple of years or so ago), was AWFUL. The service staff, in particular, was surly and almost combative. I kept saying I was gonna write to Amtrak about it, but I never got a Round Tuit.

If those same Silver Meteor folks are running that stuck train, heaven help the passengers.

I agree with the 'Ouch' part, but I don't get the pine trees part.

I mean dropping trou in the woods in Georgia is gonna be 'Ouch" and possibly a 'Sooooweeee' no matter what kind of trees they have.

Up until 11 minutes ago, it was still on time

I'd be furious, I sure hope some idiot at Amtrak gets hammered for charging for food on a stranded train.
