Tivo Download PICS!

http://www.engadget.com/entry/1234000917054004/

Pics at Engadget of Tivo Download. Too bad this doesn't look like it is for DirecTivo's...

At least it looks like there will be some more Greg the Bunny!

Some people think seeing their pics on the Internet trump NDAs. Sadly that's how many news sites get their info.

yep, this is the motivation I am sure but it is sad to see Honor go downhill and news go from a 15 minute show of Solid news by someone as reputable as a Peter Jennings into who can leak it the fastest on the internet

The editor of Engadget has mentioned in the past there are occasions were 'leaked' pics are supplied by vendors or advertisers to generate buzz. He suspects some of his early Xbox 360 shots were provided in that way. It is a strange phenomenon when the average Joe perpetrates it though, because generally the person has to keep their name private and there is no cash reward (otherwise a site/publication could be sued for compelling folks) - so what's the payoff?

I don't know if the pics are legit or not, but I am glad my Tivo has a DVD drive so I can't be fingered in this given my relationship to Engadget and knowledge of Tivo.

Downloading previews of shows on a network I don't get isn't very compelling. I want a video collection, heck let's call it Netflix, that I can buy whatever movie I want whenever I want... not as part of an advertising campaign at a specific time.

well if it is just a leak of a test run then judging it based on the content is premature

Please Dave, look at the article again and read carefully.

These do not seem to be long-form ads at all.

There are previews available, but they offer 3 shows for download.

Tivo,
This is just too damn cool. Sorry it was released this way. That part sucks.

But, DAMN! This news kicks butt!!

Shows I don't care about on networks I don't get are indeed ads. Granted they are likely more entertaining than a typical commercial and they are entirely voluntary, but unless they are giving me access to a whole season they are advertising the show and/or network.

Of course we're speculating on leaked info which may be inaccurate or incomplete and as Zeo said products in Beta may not represent final products.

I am not familair with IFC at all or the shows mentioned but the ironic thing is - if these are typically 30 minutes shows and we get 3 in one hour time period then that must mean the ads are all taken out for the download.

and speaking of Netflix, I just got this email this morning...

>>>>
Dear Devon,

As someone who enjoyed Waiting for Guffman, we thought you'd like to know that IFC has three new comedies premiering August 19 at 10pm EST. As a Netflix subscriber, you can get a special sneak preview right now.

This time around, IFC's "TV Uncut" lineup of original series includes "Hopeless Pictures," an animated comedy from the mind of Bob Balaban that follows a self-absorbed indie mogul's struggles to keep his dysfunctional studio afloat; the return of "Greg the Bunny," starring puppet duo Greg and Warren the Ape (who originally entertained audiences on Fox before finding a new home at IFC); and "The Festival," a mockumentary series about a naïve director making his film debut at M.U.F.F. (the Mountain United Film Festival). The sneak preview DVD features the first episode of all three shows, adding up to one deranged hour of IFC.

Enjoy the show,

Your Friends at Netflix

IFC normally has NO ads during the showing of their movies/programs. They operate much like HBO, but with movies shot by independent filmakers.
Mostly weirdo stuff, but occasionally some pretty good movies.

In the next week, or so: Spanish Prisoner, Humanoids From the Deep, The Night Porter, Sunshine State, Deconstructing Harry, Natural Born Killers, Ghost World.

Ok, that's really cool about the technology, but bummer if it's someone leaking who is under NDA. Wonder if that means the "Open Beta" idea will be dead before it even gets started?

It happens. Of course, if TiVo finds out who it was, there may be repercussions.

Idea good. Leak sucks. People should respect NDA's better than this.

thanks for the info. Nice to hear about the Netflix connection as well. Seems like this is the start of that partnership then but it still seems reports of Netflix not being able to get download licenses from major studios will keep the queueu short

Now I'm wondering even more if Tivo leaked the pics... awfully coincidental they were released the same day and the same time DirecTV said they are stopping the marketing of Tivo devices. Hmmm.

These three shows are also "produced in association" with Netflix. The following is from the IFC web site:
Quote:
http://ifcblog.ifctv.com/evan/2005/...apes_attac.html

We announced that the first episodes of all three new shows will be posted on ifctv.com, one week prior to their premiere on IFC TV. On August 12, you will be able to see all three premiere episodes, in their entirety, on our web site - via video streaming, at no charge. We decided to do this to reward the ifctv.com users for their support, AND to give you all a way to share the shows with friends who might not get IFC.

We announced that these three shows are the first in a 10 title, two-year output deal between IFC and Netflix. Netflix will have an exclusive home video window for IFC's next 9 titles (10, including Film School) and receive "produced in association" credit on those 9 shows. This is both smart business and great partnering - Netflix is the largest provider of indie film on DVD, and often the ONLY place to find certain indie films or docs on home video. They really give a **** about film, and are THE PERFECT home video partner for IFC.
Netflix has been doing alot with independants / smaller studios.

Why would Tivo leak crappy screenshots? Wouldn't a press release be more effective?

Viral marketing although in this case it does seem more likely someone on the beta test program took the pictures and sent them to engadget but it's hard to tell.

Now I'm wondering even more if Directv is just reacting to Tivo's IPTV offering... awfully coincidental the "news" was announced the same day and the same time Tivo's IPTV screenshots were leaked. Hmmm.

btw...

No prob... that got a chuckle out of me.

I am fascinated by the nature of these rumored offerings and relationships since it turns out Netflix is involved with IFC and the specific shows. Curiouser and curiouser!

I wish Tivo or Netflix would throw us a bone (or a press release)... their original announcement was 9/04 and we haven't heard a peep since. What's going on? Tell me something to get excited about!

The main repercussion is that for their life, they will know that for a cheap thrill they sold their honour and integrity.

Get a grip. They didn't sell anything.

You know nothing about where the pictures came from and who did it so why jump to conclusions?

Also, I take it your integrity has prevented you from looking at the pictures and talking about them or are you a just a tad hypocritical?

I don't think so. unless he signed a NDA then he can talk all about it all he wants. The idea that it came from a beta tester is just that, an idea. It is a good guess as that is most likely the way the info was leaked. I would look at this is an integrity issue if it was a beta. They are not suppose to talk to ANYONE about these types of things.

Now I think it is a cool addition, but if I were a beta, it would be wrong for me to talk about it.

yes I jumped on the NDA part but I really do not know if an NDA was involved or not, just covering that base in case it was.
