Question Have Series2 140 Hard Drive from dead unit

My old series 2 140 unit finally bit the dust. I have a new series 2 540 unit to replace it and would like to know if I can...

a) run the 540 with the 140 hard drive or
b) copy the shows off the 140's HD onto the 540's HD without destoying the OS or
c) copy the 540's operating sytem to the 140's HD without destroying the shows.

I tried putting the old drive in the new unit and it won't boot up so I'm thinking there's system specific functions in the operating system.

I have (had) a few programs on the old drive which I'd really like to get to since I don't think they will be aired again - at least not in the foreseeable future... And it's a 120GB drive which would triple the size of my new 540040. So option A would be my preference.

Barring any of these options having any likelyhood of success, has anyone started a rent-a-dvr service? If I could find another (functional) series 2 140 unit I could swap in my old HD and then transfer all the programs to another unit or my PC. So renting a series 2 1400x0 unit for a few days would do the trick.

To the best of my knowledge, most of your assumptions are incorrect. If the unit the hard drive came out of is dust so are your recorded programs. The drive would boot in the same model machine but when you tried to watch the shows it says are there they are not there.

Why do you think the recording would be gone? I have taken other hard drives from one unit to another (of same model) and they have worked just fine with all recording intact.

The only time I've had it say the recording aren't there is when I restore a backup to a new hard drive and it has the list of recordings which had been on the drive I had backed up. Since I hadn't actually backed up the recordings, I would go into Now Playing and delete all the shows it thought it had.

The recordings are tied to the individual motherboards by the Tivo software to prevent what you are trying to do. Otherwise hard drives might be shipped all over the place with copyrighted material going who knows where.
