Replacing HD without losing recordings

I've searched and read through the posts, but I'd appreciate a quick clarification. I'm very PC literate, but little Linux experience.

Out of nowhere my 2 drive HDVR2 rebooted and is stuck on "powering up" (happened while I'm away!). I'm probably going to just buy a new HD and InstantCake to create a new image, but I'm wondering if there is a way to try to save all the recordings. The rig has the stock HD and a 120gig HD from Weaknees.

Given that the HD or the image seems to be the problem, is it crazy to pull the drives and try to save the data? Can data from 2 drives be restored to 1 new one? Help!

The only possible way that I'm aware of is to use the unix/linux dd command to copy your entire disk. It will take quite a while compared to mfsbackup, but if you've already upgraded once that is what you will have to do.
