TC-Con '06 - The Final Hotel Poll

Well, now that we've got a date locked down, it's time to lock down our hotel choice. The Hotel Discussion thread has given us some very positive, constructive ideas for hotel possibilities, and now we've reached a point where we need to finalize our "Official" TC-Con '06 hotel.

Please vote after weighing all options. I'm setting this poll so that it closes on Wednesday, December 7th. That gives everyone roughly a week and a half to get their votes in. Remember, if you don't vote, you can't complain.

As always, please vote for the option you find most appealing. The poll choices reflect the hotels which had the most spirited discussion in the Hotel Discussion thread. Please feel free to post any constructive comments for/against any of the hotels listed. It's extremely likely we won't be able to do any kind of group contract, at any of the hotels listed, so please keep the listed price points in mind when voting.

And please bear in mind that I can't extoll every virtue of every hotel, so if I missed something below, I apologize. I'm just trying to cover the basics.

The breakdown of hotels:

The Aladdin Hotel & Casino

Exact price point for rooms is unavailable through the Aladdin's website. Hotels.com has the rooms listed at ~$129 per night for the week of the 'Con (Sunday - Thursday).

Pros: Aladdin is a fairly trendy hotel. It has a very nice gaming area, a stupidhuge buffet that's won several awards and caters to a wide variety of tastes, and a massive shopping complex. There's a Poker Room for those of you into that kind of thing (NTTAWWT). Because Aladdin is in a state of flux, the odds of finding cheaper room rates are pretty good, as they seem to run deals on room rates fairly regularly, though none seem to be lower than $89 a night.

Cons: Part of the reason Aladdin is in a state of flux is due to poor response from the general public. As a result, Aladdin will be converting to the Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino during the 2006 year. This means we could be dealing with a hotel undergoing renovations, and there's potential we could run into construction issues while there.

Aladdin does not (AFAIK) have any regularly running shows. Instead, Aladdin has a large concert-style theater with regularly changing acts. Aladdin's nearby hotels include the MGM Grand and the Paris hotel.

Flamingo Las Vegas

Hotel price point is $120 per the official website, for Sunday - Thursday nights.

Pros: The Flamingo is one of the staples of Vegas history. Located smackdab near the center of the strip, it makes it relatively convenient to get just about anywhere in Vegas. The Flamingo has an award winning pool. There's a convenient Monorail stop near the Flamingo as well. (Can't check the poker room status from work... conveniently, the Casino page on the Flamingo website is blocked via Websense)

Cons: The Flamingo is old. Old enough that many Vegas websites speak poorly about their rooms, and many say it's not worth the $120 price point when newer and nicer hotels are priced at a comparable level, if not lower.

Flamingo has some decent entertainment, including George Wallace and Second City Comedy on a nearly-nightly basis. The Flamingo does offer Cabana Service for up to six people per Cabana. Nearby hotels include Caesar's Palace, Bally's, and Imperial Palace.

Luxor Resort & Casino

Hotel price point is $89 for the Sunday - Thursday nights during the week of the 'Con.

Pros: The Luxor has lots of things going for it. The awesome pyramid shape. The Egyptian motif. A dedicated nightclub. A King Tut museum. Elevators that move up and down, as well as side to side. It's a well kept hotel off to the side of things.

Cons: Y'know that "Off to the side of things"? Yeah, it's REALLY off to the side. The Luxor is at the end of the strip, and it's a decent walk to the nearest Monorail stop. Getting anywhere will require either a taxi ride, a hefty walk, or a monorail trip. Or a combination. Bear in mind that what you save in money here will likely be absorbed in transportation to/from various events.

Luxor's entertainment varies, but typically includes a major show (right now, it's Hairspray), an adult offering (currently "Fantasy"), and a major performer (don't ask who it is right now). Luxor offers cabana service for it's pool, though the cabanas only hold 4 people. Nearby hotels include the Mandalay Bay and Excalibur.

Treasure Island

Hotel price point is $89 for the Sunday - Thursday of the 'Con, per the hotel's website.

Pros: Treasure Island has a lot to offer us. There's a wide variety of dining options available to us, including a 24 hour coffee shop. It's mid-strip and makes it easy to get anywhere. There are a wide variety of room types available at the TI at very reasonable price points. There's high speed internet in every room. For those of you that got Players Club cards at the NYNY the last year or two, they'll be usable at the Treasure Island. The hotel has a lot of charm and the price point is VERY reasonable.

Cons: Since TI has undergone a rebranding, it's not nearly as "peppy" as it used to be. But the decent room rates really offset that.

The nearby hotels include the Venetian and the MGM Mirage. Entertainment options include an adult show (Sirens of TI), a Cirque Du Soleil show (Mystére), the Tangerine Bar & Lounge (free for hotel guests).

So, let's get to voting. Please remember, since the official hotel is not yet locked down, it's highly recommended that people don't start making non-refundable reservations anywhere.

I'm voting for Treasure Island. Between the price point, the entertainment offered, the dining options, and the location, I think it'd be perfect for us.

T.I. for me! We loved it last year when we stayed there...

(and scantly clad women on pirate ships doesn't hurt either....)

I voted for TI because of it's location and the Circq show.

TI

I've stayed there before, and it was nice. That was back when Las Vegas was doing the "bring the kids to Vegas" thing. Since then, it's done the re-branding and has shifted to more adult orientation. The pirate shows is still there, but it's now a buch of hot chicks as the "pirates".

Seems to be a decent value these days, especially if you want something more than a "standard" room. The location isn't as bad as some may say. Across form the Venetian. Next door to the Mirage. (they actually have a little tram that connects the two). Caesars Palace is next to The Mirage

I'm voting TI due to price and location.
Seems like many of the Poker players like The Mirage and always wind up there at some point.
Its closer to Samba's which I actually hope to get to next time

Price and location wise, I think TI wins hands down, Luxor is kind of off the beaten path and quite frankly if we stayed down that end of the trip I would probably pick NYNY. Flamingo is attractive due to the pool, I know nothing about the Alladin other then the buffet, so it looks like I probably will vote for TI.

Ahoy, matey! I like what TI has to offer, both in terms of location and dining/entertainment options.

Plus, we can talk like pirates.

You may be sorry you voted for this hotel when I show up with an eyepatch and a parrot on my shoulder.

OK, Allie. That is just an adorable image. You are hereby required to attend the 'Con in such garb. All those in favor, say Arrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!

I know that we aren't planning to do a room contract but does availability of the other things we need ballroom, etc make any difference in picking a hotel?

TI sounds like the pick of the litter for now. I'd like the funky Luxor elevators, but not enough to choose that over the rest of what TI has to offer.

C'mon! Side to side elevators! Wonkavators!! THINK of the possibilities!

I don't think so. I didn't want our official hotel selection to be based on the ballroom booking.

That said, I don't suspect we'll have any problems finding a ballroom that day. Even if the hotel we vote for has no ballrooms, there are plenty of alternatives for gathering locations in Vegas.

Heck, if we could afford it, I'd even suggest a full Quarks 'Con.

Uhm, no. Not unless we get 125+ people to go, and each of them pays over $100 for their 'Con fee.

I'm trying to do everything I can to keep the 'Con fee below the triple digit mark, but it's gonna be a stretch.

No Jenga this year. Not because there was anything wrong with it last year, besides the time involved... but because I think it's time to do something different.

Perhaps something that involves an even higher level of dexterous movement and precision skills of the hand.

We could stand people up against a wall and see who can catch the most arrows shot at them. I think that meets the criteria

Jazz Hands competition?

I voted for TI. My only other choice was Flamingo, and all Flamingo has going for it is poolside cabana service, which to me really isn't worth the extra $120 in higher room costs.

Actually, in the interests of increasing TC-Con '06 attendance numbers, I'm thinking we have Jello Twister. Four people per game, and instead of Twister mats, we just lay out pans of Jello as the game board.

"Left foot, lime!"
"Right hand, strawberry!"

I'll be pairing up waldingrl and pcgrrll and any other forthcoming grrll suffix member for our demonstration games. Just so people have an understanding of how the games work, and whatnot.

Because, y'know, that seems like something fun AND educational!

If I was not at work right now I think it would be safe to say I would be in my bunk!

As it is now I'll just have to wait a bit before I make that trip to the vending machine

While LVH is one of my 2 Vegas hotels of choice (the other being Main Street Station downtown)... I voted for TI - basically for the same reasons as previously mentioned.

No decision yet on whether I will be staying there; you can't beat FREE, but at the same time... I do feel that I missed out on some things.

The first time I went to Vegas, I stayed at the Luxor. I heard about the inclinators (the inclined elevators), and since I had a room key to get past security, I checked em out. Um, ok. It's cool at first, since you're kinda going up and to the side at the same time. But by the time you get to the top, you've got your sea legs and you're over it. The trip back down was quite boring. The security guard at the bottom said "Not much to it, eh?" Yep, not much at all. Not quite a Wonkavator.

Oh, and I voted TI too.
