Exclamation Petition for DirecTV to add HMO to combo units - PLEASE READ

Hey guys,

As most of you know, DirecTV has yet to announce that they will support the HMO software upgrade. The best that I've heard from them is that they will "evaluate the Tivo release" and go from there. Undoubtedly they want to make sure people actually purchase the product, which certainly makes sense from a buisness perspective.

In my efforts to persuade DirecTV that there is indeed a market for HMO on the combo units, I've started a petition online. If you support the advancement of technology, and especially the advancement of TiVo's excellent software updates, then I ask you to please consider signing the petition.

The petition can be found at:

http://www.petitiononline.com/tivo9900/petition.html

Even if you don't have a combo unit, please consider signing the petition anyway. If for no other reason than because of what TiVo is all about - the creation of a unique and customized platform that gives the customer the media experience that they want.

Thanks for your time,

Bob

Signed it, and passed it along to some of my friends to sign as well. I'm the 109th person on the petition.

Actually I think their problem may be with the show sharing aspect of HMO, not whether or not it will sell. DirecTV has a lot to lose if someone cracks HMO and makes it easy to capture their pure digital content to a computer. Just think of how mad HBO would be if DirecTV released a product that allowed people to easily make their own Sopranos DVDs. Or how mad the MPAA would be if people could use their DirecTiVo units to make pure digital copies of movies recorded from PPV.

DirecTV has a lot more partners to answer to if this situation should arise, and it only makes sense that they would take a "wait and see" stance when it comes to HMO.

Dan

P.S. I signed the petition too

Na´ve question...could a SA TiVo and a DirecTiVo read each other's MPG streams? Aside from the encryption, they're both just plain vanilla MPEG-2, right?

BTW, some of you might want to edit out your signature # if you put it in a post here -- once you realize that this provides a direct map between your userid and your real name. Possible privacy concern, esp. when your home city is in your profile...

They can play each other's streams. At least on a Series I.

332 at current count.

My belief is that 2000 customers is a magic #.

Spread this around to other satellite boards if it hasn't been done already?

Just an update - the petition has over 900 signatures on it, and is growing fast! Thanks to all of you who have signed and passed this around.

As far as submitting the petition to Mr. Baele, and DirecTV, I am keeping daily track of the signatures, and will wait until there is a significant decrease before submitting. This should be an excellent compromise between building the maximum amount of signatures and submitting it in a reasonable amount of time.

But remember, this is not my petition - it belongs to all of us. Feel free to write to Mr. Baele and DirecTV referencing this petition at your leisure. I intend to send him actual written correspondence as well as email to their public relations and customer service departments when I feel the time is right, and I encourage all of you to do the same.

Thanks again for all of the help and support!

Bob

Direct TV should give a refund to anyone who bought a series 2. The box said it would support the HMO features!

Just wanted to update this thread as well...

Hey guys! We're at almost *1500* signatures, now. This is FANTASTIC! Please, keep reading this thread, keep employing new people to sign, and keep the movement alive. I've been speaking in private with other long-term TiVo Community members, including a TiVo Employee him (or her) self who wishes to remain nameless, and they all feel that what we're doing here is helping our cause; the TiVo cause.

Again, even if you aren't considering purchasing the HMO option, please consider Signing The Petition to SUPPORT the HMO movement - we simply want the option to purchase it, that is all.

Again, thanks all, and keep the up the good work!!!

Bob

Just an update...

Your at 1674 signatures. Good Job! Unfortunatly, I have a series 1, so there is no way I can get HMO.
