Official Anime Thread

(For those not familiar with pronouncing romanized Japanese, it's animé, which is another spelling often seen.)

General Guide Data Warning: Anime is often classified in the animation genre in the TiVo guide data rather than as anime. On one occasion, I've seen an anime show classified as neither anime nor animation. Consequently, I would encourage people to post about anime that isn't classified by TiVo as anime here, so that everyone will know about them.

Useful Anime Resources:

You think discussing fansubbed recent anime from Japan is a no-no?

I don't get techtv and the premium channels, so aside from what's airing on Cartoon Network, I don't have much else to talk about, but there is some really good stuff coming out on DVD real soon.

Anyone get the Anime Network on demand stuff?

The Anime Network seems to be growing. However, I don't know of a way to tell in which areas, exactly, it is available (it doesn't appear to be possible from their web site).

Also, note that the International Channel (only available on cable) airs a number of anime series and a weekly anime movie, all uncut (usually dubbed but occasionally subbed and even, although rarely, undubbed and unsubbed).

Another good set of forums can be found here:
http://forums.toonzone.net

There are areas for general animation, different Cartoon Network blocks (Toonami, Adult Swim, etc) and anime.

I think Cablevision has The Anime Network available in all their digital areas. I'm 100% sure it's available on the Bayonne system (yeah, I'm a subscriber).

I've updated the lists of Upcoming Movies and Current Series I maintain over in the CJKDramas.com board.

I've divided them up into animes that TiVo knows are animes and animes TiVo doesn't think are animes. Of course, my lists are just for what's on in my area.

As noted in my .Hack//SIGN thread, the script for the first episode (linked to in the thread) opens with a scene involving Tsukasa and Silver Knight that is missing in the Cartoon Network version. I've only ever seen the Cartoon Network version and would appreciate it if someone with the DVD can see if that scene exists there.

I'll check later tonight. Got the whole six disc set now (disc 6 arrived last week).

ccwf mentioned that Witch Hunter Robin, as shown on Cartoon Network, is using a new opening sequence... I have to admit I didn't notice but I had only seen one ep there before a friend of mine loaned me his Japanese DVD set of the series...

I can't believe they did that---- the opening of the series implies quite a bit (that may or may not come to be) but it's a cool opening and the theme song is more then slightly addictive.

In episode 2, the Cartoon Network version says that Silver Knight is “fond” of Subaru, but the Japanese script uses the verb 慕う, “to adore”, instead. If it's not too much trouble, it would be interesting to see what the DVD uses in Japanese and English. The word is said by the Knight in the boat with Subaru while discussing the absence of Silver Knight.

Cartoon Network typically strips shows of their openings and/or closings when they're part of the Toonami or Adult Swim blocks. It's supposedly to allow time for more commercials, etc. It's one of the common complaints anime fans have about Cartoon Network. TechTV does their own time cuts also with their Anime Unleashed block (which recently showed the first half of Last Exile - absolutely gorgeous show)

Does anyone know if TechTV or Cartoon Network will play FLCL/FRKR again?

There is a series for Ninja Scroll? That must be quite good.

By the way I am REALLLLLY liking Witch Hunter Robin. They finally "answered" a question that I had since episode 1. What was the difference between craft users and witches. Answer: nothing but he who has the power to name and categorize.

I'd bet that FLCL will be back on Cartoon Network's Adult Swim in the next few months. If you can't wait, the DVDs are very nice

I see at the International Channel's site that Sol Bianca will be replacing Fushigi Yugi: Eikoden (ふしぎ遊戯—永光伝) in two weeks. Also, they'll be rerunning a couple of Tenchi movies.

Najica Blitz Tactics. Not likely to come to tv soon! I think I saw in New Type that vol. 2 was out. I probably should just subscribe to New Type. I haven't picked it up in two months.

It sucks that they are so expensive, and come in 3 separate DVD sets for a 6 episode series... Oh well, i guess the manga will hold me over.

FLCL was a very expensive series to license hence the 3 disc release (of course, in Japan it was a six disc release but that's another story).

I'm getting no joy over in the CJKDramas.com forum trying to provoke a discussion of the text that appeared on Administrator Zaizen's right monitor in the “Family Portrait” episode of Witch Hunter Robin. It starts
Quote:
Am I a person?
Or am I a Witch?
…No, I am Robin.

Witches are the new mankind. People are the oldman.
People hate witches and Witches hate people.
My complete transcription is at the link above.

I searched around the web, and the only other analysis I could find were a few comments in the Toon Zone forum (thanks, Vince!).

I have a question:

This past episode (or was it the one before this?) seems to indicate that ALL of the people in the stn-j are descendants for witches because they can wear the orbo. Did anyone else get that impression?

Just the hunters, was my impression (i.e., not Michael or the chief).

Also, following a poster's helpful tip, I was able to find the origin of the quote above. The top part is the English translation of text from Sunrise's “Story” page about Robin's character motivation for the series. (The bottom part is from Maddy Prior of Steeleye Span as I had previously posted.) See the link above for more details (full Japanese transcription of source text, English transcription appearing in the episode, and a nice WHR cosplay page I found).

OK then. if they were descendants of witches it does not seem as if they knew that or is that just my impression?

I think they all know their connection to witches & craft-users. Amon definitely knows about his mother since he's worried if his powers might awaken and end up in him being hunted.

Yea I knew about Amon. I think Robin asked him what his power was in the first or second episode (when she said that she would not use the orbo). Then I kind of realized that Krasuma's power was "craft" as well. But I had no inkling regarding the others (not including the station chief and his assistant).

I've just updated my Upcoming Movies list.

Note: The International Channel lists the two upcoming Tenchi movies as subtitled. (Previously, they aired the dub of Tenchi Forever.)

CCWF,

Thanks. I just discovered that the International Channel is one of those shared channels so I don't get it all the time. I found out because I tried to record something that you recommended and I got some show on Court TV (a channel that I NEVER watch). Now I have to figure out when the channel is TIC and not Court TV. SIGH!
