Anybody want a gmail invite?

Over on the Happy Hour - General Chit-Chat forum, gmail invitations are being distributed by a mixture of competitions and a tree system.

The world is now almost awash in them, but they still command a small premium on ebay and it is still possible to choose a good user name before gmail accounts are opened to all and sundry.

Just to widen the distribution I thought I would run a small competition on the UK General Chit-Chat forum.

If you want a gmail account (or just want to see what all the hype has been all about) post your reason here.

If there are responses and the responses outnumber the number of invitations I have, I will send the invite(s) to the poster of the answer(s) I like the best (I will try to avoid reading the name of the poster before I make up my mind).

I've been waiting a long time for a gmail invite.

I haven't got any good reason, but I am getting married next year so a bigger email account would help with wedding preparations and invite responses etc!

Sorry but can't invite you to the wedding in return
I can however, invite you to LinkedIn and Friendster.com in return!

Yahoo are now offering 2gb accounts for premium users and 100MB for free as a response to Gmail!

Edit: Remove me - Got one now!

Why I want one?

I have my own email server, and theoretically I can have up to 160 gigs of space for my mail.

But, it would be nice to see what Google offers.

I also want to see what all the fuss is about.

How happy are you about someone reading your mail?

Google is, or was, planning to read your mail in order to serve up ads based on its content.

When you are logged into your Gmail account, Google will display targeted ads and other relevant information based on the content of the email displayed.

Well - I'd still want to get in there early to try and ensure a decent address too - who knows how things will turn out. If it sucks then I've not lost anything, so I'd still want to give it a go.

you still there pgogborn? /waves

Yes, and you are in with a very good chance.

Should have made it clear that I was waiting 'till 24:00 UST 18th June 2004 before handing out the invites. This is because that was the deadline I gave somebody who I am willing to give an automatic invite to, if s/he does not reply I have got an extra invite to give out >

I suppose my reason for wanting one is simply to get my username before somebody else nicks it. There's nothing worse than having to log in as 'ian1034@...com' and finding that the bird that you always fancied has sent the party invite to 'ian1033@...com'.

Yes, but this is a deliberately emotive way of describing it. No human reads the mail. There is a very good counter at the link that fatbloke posted.

Just shortly after BT dumped all their talk21.com accounts into Yahoo and then pumped us to 'upgrade' to their £1.50 a month package to get 50MB of storage and reinstate POP3 access.
Funny old world people competing to give the best free service - reminds me of 2000 all over again - a land grab!

I have been given a load more invites today. Whoever doesn't get one from pgogborn tomorrow can have one from me if they are still interested.

I look forward to pgogborn announcing the winners tomorrow!

I assume that those who are providing these invites actually use it already. What do you think of it, or is it just another email provider?

I think it's pretty good as a webmail service. I hardly ever even notice or look at the ads (which don't always appear) next to the e-mail.

The conversation view is a good idea, instead of 20 or so e-mails on the same subject in your inbox they are all grouped together as if you were reading a TCF thread.

As for whether or not you like the idea of a program reading your mails.....that's for the individual to decide.

Can these be used as a normal pop3 mail service too?

Not at the moment. If you don't use their GUI, they lose their ability to spam you, and any form of revenue income for them.

The other point is that you can't really delete the messages off the server, or they wouldn't be there for their search interface.

Wow, people offering gmail invites :-)

I have been trying to get one for a while now, as I develop an open-source web browser (galeon for those interested), and we have had reports of incompatibilities with gmail, so would really like an account to test it. Plus of course there is the 'I got my account first' factor with my friends :-)

Oooo if there are any spare invites going I'd like to be considered. I'm in need of a larger web based email and er...I enjoy the pain of betas.

The person on the other thread left it down to the wire, but has now claimed one of my invites.

cyril has been disqualified for not revealing that somebody else has already bunged him an invite.

So, as at the moment I am in one of my Occam's Razor moods (`Pluralitas non est ponenda sine necessitas.' my version 'the simplest answer is usually the right answer') I award my other currently available invite to iankb.

iankb, post here or pm me an email address to send the invite to.

I see Regor is being very generous, but I will also return to this thread if I get more invites before gmail goes on general release.

Thanks pgogborn. I always knew that being simple had it's advantages.

iankb, invitation dispatched.

The main reason why I joined up is that I am obsessive about having multiple back-ups at different sites. Gmail permits attachment's of 10 megabytes with total space of 1,000 megabytes. I intended to just use the account to send myself and store emails with attachments of useful documents, programs etc.

However, as Regor notes, the conversation view is a good idea and until other email clients copy the idea I will be using gmail for correspondence which creates multiple emails under the same Re: heading.

For offsite backup, I use Iomega's iStorage service. You have to subscribe, and I'm sure that there are much, much cheaper alternatives such as a POP3 mailserver, but it does give you a secure storage facility.

The distribution of invites are now assuming tidal wave proportions, I have been restocked.

Anybody that wants one, just post here. No need to say why you want one, first come, first served.

Thank you Regor.

I teach IT in Adult Ed all over several sites and I can keep lesson plans and exercises etc in there as attachments for easy access! Great for when I forget to take the right CD or Floppy.
