muggum, the Tuesday night ratings might have been lower because (guesses):

1) seemed like a lot less advertising on all the viacom channels.

2) a "2" in the title seems to turn people off watching reality shows in my opinion. It wasn't called "The Real World 2" or "Survivor 2" or "American Idol 2" or (won't be called) "The Apprentice 2." It was "The Real World: LA," "Survivor: Australia," "American Idol" and "The Apprentice." At least with me, 2 reminds me that I've seen something like it before and its a sequel (most sequels aren't good, this being an expection).

3) it had a romance theme that probably turned a lot of guys off even though once you watch it, you realize you don't have to know "The Bachelor" to like it.

4) the old timeslot. last year it was on at 9pm on tuesdays. this year it was 10pm, against similar age group viewing competition like "The Real World" (which had been on for a while with 'San Diego' and on Viacom's MTV), Nip/Tuck, Law & Order: SVU, and other shows).

complete educated guesses.
glad the new timeslot is helping with the ratings though.

Also, how had the Schmos not heard of "Joe Schmo 1" when this edition was taping?...even the house looks somewhat the same.

EDIT: switched CSI: Miami to L&O: SVU because CSI: Miami is on Monday nights (SVU is on NBC on Tuesdays).

Hey everyone,

I'm new here but not to Joe Schmo! I actually found this forum through a link on the official site blog.

Anyways, tonight's episode was amazing, and I can't wait to see how well Ingrid performs in her new role. Does anyone else find it funny that we have two weepers now? (Eleanor & Amanda) I'd also like to know more about why tonight's ep was cut short, but I guess we'll know soon, won't we?

Hey, good to see you here, DXSSI.

And I'm encouraged by the numbers at FORT. I really do think this show is the best thing out there this summer and it deserves ratings that reflect that. (And by the way, from what I remember from my time there, 199 was a lot more than some of the network shows ever got there by far. Very cool!)

The 90 minute episode is a joke on all of us I think. Muggum was being vague when he said he'd explain it "eventually......."

Key word there "........"

the whole meet the parents bit was awesome. And I've got to give tim props for mentioning "the only question we have for bryce is have you ever been arrested for stalking."

I truely did not want to see any characters booted. I love all the guy characters. I'll miss bryce. (although I suspect we'll see him soon)

I'm not a reality show fan. The plane bit is an omage to a plane from Big Brother right?

Yes the plane is an omage to the infamous banner planes from Big Brother. (Which starts tomorrow night by the way.)

By the way, was I the only person who TOTALLY didn't see the "new schmo" thing coming? That caught me completely off-guard.

Well, that was a fun episode. Bringing in Amanda was a shock -- at least to me. Clever of the producers to use the assets they have on hand.

I liked the reveal -- especially considering that the producers had to come up with it on the fly. Keeping Ingrid around must really monkey with the script though -- after all two mostly unscripted females have to make it to the end of the show. Funny that Amanda thinks Ingrid is the least-trustworthy so far.

Hey if Ingrid's working for the show does that make her an actress (contractually), or is she still a game-show "contestant" because of the fact that the $100,000 is on the table? I betting it's the latter.

Again, I love the "fun-with-titles" the producers have going on. The introduction of Amanda includes a "Thank God she thinks its all real" title, plus another one that escapes me. Clever touch changing the Schmo graphics (although that's probably post-production). Can't wait to see how the introduction is changed:

Quote:
Ralph: Meet Tim and Ingrid. The two real people that don't realize the reality show they're supposed to be on is FAKE.

Except Ingrid, who came really close to figuring it out, so we made her part of the game.

So here's Amanda, the next real woman who we hope thinks the show is real.

In reality, I think they'll put Tim and Amanda first in the intro, then Ingrid and then the rest of the cast.

Bummed that the episode only ran 60 minutes, but it was really good nonetheless. I hope the extra 22 mins. from this episode shows up somewhere.

When they went to the door I thought it was a new Jane Schmo or MKG coming back as a new actor.

Hi all, this is my first post!

I'm curious, in one of last week's previews they implied they "flipped the script". I'm not sure if they meant by adding Amanda, but really it doesn't sound (to me anyway) like the script has had to be significantly altered.

I mean they were undoubtedly planning to get rid of Ambrosia this episode anyway. If Ingrid HAD left, THEN that would have dramatically changed the script (as "flipped" implied to me) due to the fact they COULDN'T evict Ambrosia. But aside from a new "Falcon Twist" to introduce the new character and adding a few lines for Ingrid, is the script really changed all that much?

A very interesting analysis, f44. Specifically about the number '2.' Never thought of that, and it's probably true.

I can't imagine so. Everywhere Ingrid was supposed to be in the script during her "Schmoing" period has just been replaced by Amanda. The only difference with the show that I can see now is the show being over budget with the extra $100,000 they will now have to give to Amanda... or not.

Question to muggum or anyone up for speculation time as a possible spoiler for next week... are we going to see MKG as a relative of Austin's during the women's dinner with parents/relatives?

Muggum - this was the show's best episode yet! Honestly.

And a question we're all dying to know, I'm sure - this isn't the last we've seen of Bryce, right?!?

Also, something that I was thinking during Ingrid's reveal - where was Tim during all of that? And how/what did you explain to the new "Jane Schmo" to justify bringing her in later? How did you get her to join the show at the last minute? Was she always a back up?

Oh, this is getting bad. Our Man Muggum himself is sitting here waiting for ME to weigh in! I'm actually kinda honored...it's not often a TV producer/creator is looking for my reaction...

Well, I loved it. The whole Ingrid reveal (sort of a mini-version of the MKG reveal, dialed down a little)...great. I am very much looking forward to see how she handles life as a Schmo Actor. The lie detector test, and Tim's reactions, including those rather large Seeds in the Garden of Gay planted by Gerald (you say THAT five times fast!). Pissing off the parents. And Bryce's classic exit...mark my words, Bryce WILL be back, even if peering in from Passion Rock!

The addition of Amanda was surprising, but shouldn't have been to me. I mean, I'm the one who speculated in one of the earlier threads about it! I remembered that we did have a backup Schmo or two waiting in the wings in season 1, should Matt have fizzled out.

I don't know what to think about Amanda yet. She seems nice, but hasn't had much face time. It was a nice test to have Ingrid pop the "Porked and Beans" news to her...and her instant reaction not trusting Ingrid afterwards...the only one she'd recognized.

I suspect Ingrid's going to be on a short leash at the beginning, because she is NOT an actor, and she's basically going to be playing herself in front of Tim. This move, by the way, probably quashes any chance of Tim and Ingrid pairing up at the end...they won't have that "shared experience" anymore, since she'll be spending a lot of the time trying to fool him!

I do like the dynamics of the Ingrid crossover, though...and I suspect her reveal and the circumstances leading to it gave the crew valuable insight on what may have been just a BIT much. Some of it was a bit tamer this week. But that might change as the familiarity level with Amanda, especially, grows. If she's not throwing curveballs at the nature of the show from Day One like Ingrid was, it'll probably amp up more...

'Schmo' a go with new slot
Sun Jul 4, 9:19 PM ET
Denise Martin, STAFF

Fans of Spike TV's "The Joe Schmo Show" can get their fix a day ahead of schedule.

After two weeks of dismal ratings for the sophomore season of the network's reality parody -- the NBA Finals (news - web sites) crushed the premiere -- execs convened to devise a solution.

Without a lot of fanfare, the cabler quietly shifted new episodes of "Joe Schmo 2" from Tuesdays at 10 to Mondays at 11 p.m., putting the skein directly after WWE Raw wrestling -- the net's highest-rated franchise.

The gamble paid off: Ratings rocketed for the third episode, which aired June 28. Seg attracted 1.2 million viewers, nearly tripling the average for the first two segments.

Series will continue to premiere new episodes Mondays with repeat telecasts on Tuesdays.

Meanwhile, TBS' "Outback Jack" perked up in its second outing, adding almost 300,000 viewers for a total of 2.4 million. And Bravo's salon-set reality series "Blow Out" is beginning to show signs of life, drawing a series-high audience of 855,000 in its fourth episode.

Yippee! The move worked. I'm in the central time zone & love the fact JS2 doesn't have any competition in it's time slot. Later is better. I can watch the news anytime.

I haven't seen this episode yet, I was excited when I found out it would be on Monday (I've been watching on Sunday due to conflicts). I set my DVR to record and becasue it was following wrestling I gave it a full 50 minutes after the hour and a half.

Curious as to how there can be 3 pages of discussion on a show that ended well after midnight I peaked at a few of the comments only to find out that it isn't a 90 minutes show, and Rhett is not commenting. Well, I guess I have to watch tonight to see what it's all about, but I have a question to all of you who have contributed already to this conversation: Did anyone go to sleep last night?

Gerald's lie detector results were ridiculous. I was expected the deep dark secrets to be much worse (although Brice's was pretty funny)

I am half and half about this episode, honestly.

I am *assuming* that the change from 90 minute to 60 minute was one done by SpikeTV, not by Muggum et al. Am I the only one who thought the show FELT like it was a 90 minute show cut to 60? The segues were choppy; was there ever an explanation as to why the stripper was suddenly there and just left? For a major new character, we got maddeningly little of Amanda ... and of course, i am a little upset that MKG evidently hit the cutting room floor.

Bringing Ingrid in seems like the right thing to do, but as it has been discussed here ad naseum (and by the actors last night), it's gotta be dangerous. I know that decision was a really hard one for the producers ... here's to hoping Ingrid can pull it off. I will say that other than the one "gossip" scene, she felt absent; like she looked afraid to roll her eyes at Derek's over the top lines like she used to. I have faith in her intelligence, tho.

So what "role" is Ingrid to play? Well, i think there's some real potential here, actually ... Ingrid is a political consultant, whom i'm sure has been in some various contact with muckraking; she's by default set as Amanda's new "buddy", positioned to fill her in with all the details Amanda may have missed. She gets the assignment of passing on the "Porked and Beans" detail ... Ingrid is now the WEASEL, the TATTLETALE, the SNITCH! I hope they play this up, i love to see a caricature develop out of what was a real person.

Now, of course, for the good things ... the writing and the actors. Bryce, i know you'll be back in some form or another, but I miss ya already. What a convincing breakdown! And "Mockingbird ... Mockingbird ... Mockingbird" goes right into this year's catchphrase pile, along with "Rubber Duck-ulous" . I never even watched Big Brother, yet i recognize the joke with the plane in the coming attractions ... perfect use of a character post-eviction.

I thought for sure TJ was getting the boot last night, based on the fact that Piper's parents would tell her to get rid of this "playa" (ASIDE: I'd like to publicly note that i TOTALLY called the parents thing in last week's thread ). He had a defeated, mournful look on during the episode, like he KNEW he didn't do well with the parents. Subtle, and fantastic.

"Who's in the loo" and "Basket of fags". LOL.

And the funniest line of the night, which in actuality was in the spoilers for NEXT WEEK .. "I'm sorry we had to see that ... ... ... on such a small screen". HAHAHAHAHAHAHA.

I can only hope tonight's replay has the full 90 minutes, and/or Muggum is "allowed" to explain things. I surely hope Spike isn't messing with our Schmo fix.

As frustrated as I am with the episode being shortened, I'm glad it wasn't just a local thing. My worst fear was that all of you fine people got to see it and those of us in Canada didn't. I know that the programming is different up here, because "Star Trek TNG" is our Monday night Schmo lead-in, so I was frantic. "Do I check the threads? Do I not check the threads?"

This midnight-Schmoing is taking a toll on my beauty sleep, but if it helps the ratings, I'm all for it! (Gotta love the Atlantic time zone!)

Muggum, I loved the reveal to Ingrid. I love the way it basically stated the obvious to her in increasing amounts of silliness.

Oh, and Ralph? Loved your contribution to the reveal, especially the bit with the teeth.

He may be the person responsible for the plane fly over next week. That was my first thought when I saw the plane flying over and everybody's reaction to it. He's the kind of person that would spend the money to rent a plane, to tell Piper how much he loves her.

I laughed out loud at that part, not just because it was really funny, but because it seemed like they were trying to push Ingrid well past the point of disbelief before finally having to reveal all. It was like "the last hurrah".

Well a definite A for effort, but a C+ for editing from me. Loved the reveal and the tension about whether Ingrid would turn pro...very exciting and fun! Also loved the backup Schmo idea (and think Amanda may be perfect for it...a shame she couldn't have been there from the beginning). Were there other Schmos behind the other doors? Or were Piper and Austin directed to open that specific door? (That's my suspicion, anyway.)

The manicure/pedicure date seemed abbreviated to me...surely it was re-edited. Even the dinner seemed to go way too quickly to build up adequate suspense over whether the guys would fulfill their challenges. Another heavily re-edited segment?

Piper's dad, re: the "c" word... "I don't say that and I certainly don't DO that!" Poor "Piper's mom"! Oh well...frankly, I figured he would have told Tim that he admired his restraint in NOT saying it instead of getting a bit indignant over it (in the winery)...but he seems appropriately a "Daddy's Girl Daddy".

Loved the fact that Gerald was considered "non-threatening" by the folks. Also loved the music stabs when the polygraph admin gave thumbs up or down...nicely done!

Muggum, PLEASE tell us Spike! will look at the ratings and decide to air a repeat with all 90 mins intact! (BTW, I'm totally stunned that the Monday move worked...it's on so late and I really didn't take the Wrestling crowd to work well as a carryover audience. Go fig, eh?)

Gerald rocks, btw...Bryce rocks, too...those performances at the eviction ceremony were priceless. (Gerald: "Your mom made me feel like I was her own daughter!" RIOT! Bryce: "Mockingbird! Muh...muh...MOCKINGBIRD!" and "Can I hug Piper?"...Hilarious! What must Amanda have been thinking, being so new to the whole thing?)

Gotta wonder if the airplane message is gonna say something like "Dear Piper, Mockingbird!"

The show is at least as good as last year's...and, frankly, the crew's ability to roll with the changes is exceptional.

I want the DVD sooner for this one!

I'll probably address this in my blog, but the reason Spike didn't air the 90 minute episode was fear of it harming the ratings. The previous week, viewers started to leave the show around midnight, which indicated that they were going to sleep. The 90 minute episode would have ended at about 12:40 AM, which was too late for Spike's taste. When Nielsen/the media announce a show's rating, they use a number that averages viewers for the entire hour (or in this case, hour and a half). Spike didn't want that number to plummet.

I am trying to get them to commit to airing the 90 minute episode sometime this week. It's much better than the 60 minute version. It includes Matt Gould's appearance, Derek Newcastle's 'British Breakfast,' more Amanda and Ingrid, and a wonderful scene between Gerald, TJ, and Amanda where Gerald counsels TJ about how to pick up ladies. Wish me luck!
