Big Grin TiVo Unveils TiVo Rewards™ Program

TiVo also kicked off today a unique rewards program that is designed to encourage its already loyal and passionate subscriber base to refer new subscribers. Existing TiVo customers will earn points whenever they refer friends and family who purchase a TiVo box and activate the service. The all new TiVo Rewards™ program is one of the few that allow members to earn points without purchasing any goods or services.

TiVo also announced it has partnered with Juniper Bank to offer a TiVo® branded Platinum MasterCard® with no annual fee and a 0% Introductory APR.

TiVo Points earned through referrals or purchases on the new card can be redeemed for TiVo service upgrades, merchandise, accessories, TiVo boxes, an Apple® iPod®, Nikon digital cameras, Bose® QuietComfort® headphones and more.

TiVo subscribers can register online at www.tivo.com/rewards after August 11, 2004 and immediately begin earning points both for referrals and for use of the new TiVo Platinum MasterCard. TiVo subscribers will earn one TiVo Point for every $1 spent. For a limited time, cardholders can earn double TiVo Rewards points – up to 10,000 points – and up to 5,000 points with a balance transfer.

Works now. Although all you get is a little blurb saying...

The TiVo Rewards program is coming soon; please check back on August 11th, 2004.

Woo Hoo! Dang - I wonder whether this will work with retroactive effect

Although seeing the glazed over eyes of friends and family who've bought and are now hooked onto TiVo's 'thanks' to my convincing (conniving?) is reward enough for THIS loyal TiVo-ngelist

<edit> I can just see myself hanging around Best Buy's and Circuit City's displays in my free time, trying to make an extra buck (now that their store salespersons are not commission-based any more!)

I'll get the TiVo credit card just to match the TiVo window clings I have on my car, the TiVo magnets on my refrigerator, and the TiVo plush dolls in my living room!

Just my luck! I purchased a TiVo and 3 month subscription for my brother and his wife as a wedding gift the last week of July. He hasn't even had chance to setup and activate. If only he had put off his wedding a couple of weeks. :-)

Okay, I just checked out their rewards program. It takes 25000 points to buy a Nikon Coolpix 4200, which I believe could actually be bought for less than $250, so this means that each point is worth less than 1 cent. Their credit card will earn you one point per dollar, which is equivalent to just under 1% cash back on your purchases (at least as far as the camera goes - I haven't checked out all the other merchandise). This doesn't sound competitive at all to my current credit cards.

However, the refer-a-friend sounds like it could be a good deal. 5000 points per referal, which is a fairly good amount of points. If I participate, it won't be with the credit card, but the refer-a-friend seems worth it.

You are in luck then. You can sign up for the Rewards program at tivo.com/rewards. When you brother activates TiVo service, have him put in your e-mail address as the "referrer" and you will have 5000 cool TiVo Rewards points. Points are available for all activations from August 10, 2004 (today) forward.

I think the best of those rewards is the option to transfer lifetime service to another machine (for 20,000 points - four referrals):

Transfer your Product Lifetime Subscription* from one qualifying TiVo(R)Digital Video Recorder (DVR) to another qualifying TiVo DVR.*(Cannot be used to activate DIRECTV DVR with TiVo service).

Anybody ever deal with a credit card from this Juniper Bank? I could use the credit card to rack up many points.

That's a lot of spending to rake in points.

At 1 point per dollar, it does not seem too bad. I can easily spend $1,500 to get those coasters!

2 questions:

1 - if I sell a TiVo S1 w/ lifetime, I assume I don't get the referral 5,000 points when the buyer "transfers" the TiVo to his Manage My Account because there is no Activation, right? What about if it wasn't lifetime? If I sold the box to them and then they "activate" via monthly or lifetime, do I get the referral bonus? If so, what's to stop people from "passing the box around" every 3 mos. and getting the referral every time?

2 - Can you refer yourself and still get the 5k points? I bought a refurb and haven't activated yet. When I activate, can I put my own E-mail as the referrer or will it kick it out? If it kicks it out, won't people just use multiple E-mail addresses?

Points are awarded for any initial activation (i.e. activation of a particular DVR for a new customer). There are FAQ's and the official terms and conditions at www.tivo.com/rewards.

You can't refer yourself at this time.

Now all you need to do is add a 50,000 point category with the option to receive the current backdoor code.
