Cachecard and frequent rebooting

Anyone with a cachecard having trouble with unexplained rebooting. I have a DSR6000 with a non hacked version of 3.01c2 on a new drive. After installing a cachecard with different memory DIMMs that all are recognized by the cachecard, my system reboots at irregular intervals. If left alone (no touching the remote) the system ran for 6 days. Once I start using it to view shows, it reboots. I have tried working with Nick but he has thrown in the towel. The card hardware doesn't cause the machine to crash if the driver doesn't load (by removing the RAM). Any ideas? I hate using this card simply as an expensive Turbonet card.

Send a message via Yahoo to devicemanager
If this started after the card was installed, I would remove it and see if it continues. Might be a bad card!?

Are you getting your daily calls made?

What happens if you try to cross load the SW from the 'good' unit to the 'bad'. (I know different brands, but IIRC it works OK - just disconnect the phone).

Ok, I have added a new testmode to try:

http://www.silicondust.com/cachecard_20040928tr1.zip

Edit your rc.sysinit file, find the line that loads cachecard.o, and add "testmode=2" (no quotes) to the end of the insmod line.

To check - the kernel log should report that testmode 2 is enabled.

Jafa,
I'll try it out this weekend after I make sure another Tivo will get any possible missed shows.

Nick,
Still no good. It still reboots every 3 hours at best. I will send that disk image out next week. I think this machine is destined for a turbonet card instead.

Did you add "testmode=2" to the insmod line?

Yes I did. Here is the section from rc.sysinit:

echo "Splash the screen..."
osdwriter /tvbin/PromScreen2Version7.$TV_STD.png
/sbin/insmod -f /lib/modules/cachecard.o testmode=2
/sbin/cachectl -t
osdwriter /tvbin/PromScreen2Version7.$TV_STD.png

I posted it over on your server:

Nick,
The newest driver is up and running with testmode=3. Do you want the log now, or only if it crashes?

There won't be anything interesting in the log... I am only interested to know if it still crashes your tivo.

I just found and fixed a bug in the ethernet driver which would cause a tivo to lock up when under heavy ethernet load.

Can you please remove the testmode option and update to the latest public release version here:

Nick,
I will make those changes after my wife watches her sh#t tonight. I have 2 other questions maybe you could answer.

1) I find that the ethernet acccess on my DTivo with the cachecard seems better (faster, more reliable) than the access via my other box that has a turbonet. Are they the same chips? Is this just a fluke?

2) What were the 'Apple' partitions from that pdisk printout? That drive never saw any of my Macs.

Jeff

Hi,

Turbonet and Cachecard use different ethernet chips... Turbonet uses a 16-bit bus, Cachecard uses a 32-bit bus.

One thing to check - did you give your tivos different mac addresses? If not, telnet into one of them and run nic_config_tivo to change the mac address (pick any number for the low order bytes). You will need to reboot the tivo and the pc after making this change (or flush the arp cache on the pc).

There actually aren't any apple partitions... but the tivo does use an apple format partion table. The first reference to apple is the partition table itself. The second is the small amount of unused space at the end of the drive.

Nick

Nick,
Thanks for those answers. Actually, my Tivos are at the upper end of the address range at fixed positions .200 .201 and .202. Before I did that, I couldn't find them in the mess of machines getting addresses from the router. The network access of the cachecard seems faster than the turbonet.

So far so good, the cachecard machine is up to a full 24 hrs of heavy use including network access without problems. I'll keep my fingers crossed.

Cool - please let me know. If that was the problem then you have to laugh at the bug being in the ethernet driver

Regarding running two tivos on the same network - you need to check the mac address (as opposed to the ip address). If you have not chagned the mac address on at least one of the tivos then they will conflict with each other.

Ahhh... yes, mine was locking up under heavy "ethernet load" as you call it. Since removing those hacks and not trying them, no crashes or lockups. I'll try the latest release, re-install the advanced hacks, get them running and report.

I did not realize that. So both the cachecard and the Turbonet are preconfigured with the same hardware address? Hmmmmm. That would explain a few things. BTW, 2 full days without any problems (Where is the damn 'smile' for fingers crossed?).

Wow! Changing the MAC address on the other machines really fixed my 'heavy ethernet load' issue. This wasn't the cause of the crashes since I originally tested the cachecard without connecting to my network. I never would have thought about changing the actual MAC address assuming they were different (you know what they say about assuming).

Jeff

EDIT
Spoke too soon... Crashed tonight during a 'heavy ethernet load'. Since I don't want to confuse the debugging process, I will refrain from anything other than normal use for now. Oh well, it made it to 2 full days without a crash using the newest driver. That's a great start.

Nick,
No good. Even without using the ethernet port, the Dtivo crashed multiple times without any provocation. What next?

I'm sensing it's something different than the ethernet use; mine's been sending stuff all day (granted, through a 10 Mbps hub at half-duplex, so it feeds at 0.95 Mbps or so) without so much as a hiccup.

TivoDoc has a unique problem. I suspect it is a hardware fault with his tivo or some other installed program causing problems but I would still like to know the root cause.

TivoDoc - can you please run this version with "testmode=1":

Nick,
No good! I only got 6 hours before it rebooted while watching a show. Here's the log with hours of 'TCP keep alive' removed from the middle of the 6hrs of up time. There are 2 boot cycles. The first is from the 6 hrs of uptime and the second is right after the crash before I pulled the plug.
