Not entirely true. There was a pretty extensive TiVo presentation at the 'Con last year that occupied a lot of time, which may be why you heard it was "overly structured". None of the TiVo folks seemed unhappy to be there, and all of them were happy participants. TiVoOpsMgr, TiVoPony, and TiVoShanan even joined us in some of our group events, like the Star Trek Experience, Drinklink, and Little Black Dress night.

That said, we are definitely planning a much less "structured" Con this year. We have again invited TiVo to come show us a few demos, but we don't anticipate it will be nearly as lengthy as last year's were. We'll also have our 'Con room for an entire day. We want this year's 'Con to focus more on folks having time to sit around in a group setting, meet folks they've never had a chance to talk with, enjoy a good meal and some drinks, and other general carousing. As a result, we're pretty much gonna end up eschewing the ESPNZone this time around, and just renting a ballroom inside the NYNY hotel. We'll have the ballroom for the whole day, and will end up using it for the 'Con event in the afternoon, and then for some party games such as Drinklink in the evening. We may also have less swag than last year as a result, but we feel that's a fair trade off.

Also, Hippster and I are still finalizing our numbers, but we should have the full convention fee nailed down within the next 7 - 10 days. We're trying to minimize costs for everyone involved, but we still anticipate a slight increase in costs over last year.

Also, I feel compelled to reiterate what martin said, particularly now that Hippster and I are mired in planning. Unixadm's organization of the 'Con last year was nothing short of a Herculean feat. Considering how much work is required to plan one of these things, and that he was the only one doing it, and that it was our first ever convention, unixadm did an amazing job. In fact, the 'Con was one of the best vacations of my life.

The changing from the ESPN zone to the ballroom is the greatest change from last year.

At ESPN you had big booths, and up front chairs. Nobody in the booths could see the people in the chairs, and vice versa. Most of the people in the booths couldn't see the booth next to them.

Having one big room is much more conducive to chatting up people, and general shmoozing.

Might I say that every time I get an email from this thread I rush over here in anticipation of something. I don't know what.

But I WANT TO GO NOW!!!

That is all you may return to your regularly scheduled programming.

I'd like to go now, too. But then my boss would call and tell me that as far as she's concerned, I can stay in Vegas permanently.

I haven't signed up yet, but I plan on going.

I need to wait till see that the selling of my condo and the moving to MIami falls into place without disaster. But once that happens, I still plan on taking a 2-3 month roadtrip with me landing in Vegas for the con.

I was going to wait to RSVP, but Skittles pointed out to me that it's relatively small, I'll go ahead and do it now.

Well, it's not really her fault. I'm short one staffer. No backup. If I don't show up for a day, several pages of the newspaper won't get published. Any boss worth their salt would have something to say about that.

OK folks, time for an update on the deposits, the convention fees, what we have planned, and so on.

As it stands right now, we're working with the NYNY on our convention needs, and we've pretty much settled on the Brooklyn Ballroom. From everything we've seen (and BIG THANKS go out to Marc, who did some amazing recon work for us), this is a pretty large ballroom, its layout will work well for the mingling/schmoozing aspect (which ESPNZone lacked), and should easily accomodate both the 'Con in the afternoon as well as Drinklink later in the night.

As it stands, we're looking at a final convention cost of $85 per person. Based on the fact that we're not receiving many deposits compared to last year, we're expecting a slightly lower turnout compared to last year. Between that, and the change in venue, we've had to slightly increase the convention costs from last year. We're trying our absolute best to keep the costs to everyone as low as possible, and if we can minimize those costs at all, we will.

The cutoff date for payments (as well as refunds on any deposits/payments) is May 10th. We'll make sure lots of notes go up beforehand to remind people as that date approaches. But, May 11th is when we need to have our final tally in, and that means we've got to lock down the number of plates/heads we'll have in the 'Con.

For those of you that would like to pay your full convention costs now, please feel free to do so using this link. It gets it out of the way for you, and it's one less thing you'll have to worry about. It also helps us get the money necessary to put down the deposit on the ballroom, which we need to secure as soon as possible.

For those of you that are planning on attending and haven't yet made your deposit, we appreciate you making your deposits as soon as possible. In addition to helping us with the planning/booking, you'll help us get a more accurate idea of how many people will be in attendance for TC-Con 2005.

For those of you thinking about coming, and keep hemming and hawing about whether or not you should go.... c'mooooon. We're now less than 4 months away from the 'Con date, and Hipp and I are working on making this a great event that you won't want to miss.

Sweet.

What is a 'drink link' (I am probobly getting laughed out now).

And should we be setting aside extra $$ for the convention for any purpose, or is the $85 admission fee fully inclusive?

Thanks

Honestly, you should be setting aside lots of money.

The $85 doesn't inlude your room, it doesn't include any events outside the actual event, doesn't include your meals (other than the convention meal), gambling money, strip clubs, shows, etc...

Drink link = think Pictionary after an open bar

The $85 is the total fee for anything taking place in the ballroom, which includes the main convention and meal. We are still working out the exact details but there will be an open bar for some of the time, with a cash bar after.

I know that . I am budgeting for the events that I'm gong to be doing. I just didn't want to show up at the TC-Con and findout it was another 10,20,30.... for some part of it that I didn't know about.

Pictionary can be crazy enough sober. After a few drinks it should be very interesting

OK, I'm all paid up now, and I'm bringing a friend, so I paid up for her too.

Now I just have to save up enough money to pay for meals, a bit of entertainment, and a few spins on the MegaBucks machines.

"Drinklink" is a version of Pictionary. I assume that in some variants, drinking is involved, but it was just a general good time when we played at the con last year.

Drinking is not required, however it is encouraged.

<--- Sorry he left early last year

You have no idea. Muahahahahaha!

You know, it seems sort of incestuous that I paid the balance of my TC-Con 2005 via Paypal using my TiVo Mastercard. Do I get bonus points?
