Lost 10/20 Spoilers

I was watching live and saw the Tivo cut off the recording.

Here is what happened at the end.

Since this is a spoilers thread, I won't hide it.

Jack and Kate were sitting on the beach talking. Kate asked Jack what he did that day, and he said, "I needed to take care of a few things."

Her, "That's all I'm going to get?"

Him, "My father died in Australia, in Sydney."

Her, "I'm sorry."

Him, "I'm sorry too"

Cut to logo.

Thanks for the ending -- this cutting off the last minute crap really pisses me off. And yes, I know it's the network info that's wrong, not the Tivo.

It's interesting, for now, that each week features flashbacks of a character. The missing body is creepy. Great show.

ahh- I am loving it more and more! I was afraid it would get to sci-fish with monsters in the jungle... but I like that it is more about the characters...

I actually got a little teary eyed at the ticket check in counter....

Man, now ABC is catching NBC's running over disease. What is wrong with TV execs nowadays? Morons!

Anywho, I still think there is no magic. Jack is hallucinating. His dad's body could have been thrown clear of the coffin. We'll see.

Island of Dr. Moreau, I'm tellin' ya.

Also in the begining of the episode there is a scene right before Jack leaves the tent where the back gorund is repeated....the same 2 people walk by twice on the beach....

Thrown clear of a sealed coffin.

LOL. I noticed that, too. It's hard not to, when you are looking at the people and thinking "now, who is that?"

I agree with Rob -- no way he was thrown clear since Doc had to work pretty hard to get the coffin to open up in the first place.

Back on the beach with Kate, he seemed to be taking it quite well, though...

FWIW, I wonder when she'll be hitting the beach in her skivvies again...

Well it might have been sealed. It did open without unlocking it or anything. I thought his body might have been thrown clear when I first saw it. Who knows on this island. Too bad the pilot didn't look into the eye of the island and see something beautiful. :P Oh and what did the mother mean when she said "After what you did" to Jack. What did he do?

Not really. Their business is to generate ad revenue. Their customers are the advertisers. Their product is viewers. The shows are just the bait to bring the product to the customer. They are not in the business of entertaining you. They only do it as a means to an end. This meets theirs and their customers needs.

Having said that, I pad Lost now. [/hijack]

And bear in mind that the vast majority of Americans don't use TiVo, or even a VCR, to watch their shows. For normal people (i.e., not us), it's really only a minor inconvenience, because if they even notice, they can make the choice to change the channel or not.

I think DVRs are going to become an increasingly important force in television, and as that happens, the networks will have to cut the crap...because instead of pissing off a few early-adopter geeks, they're going to be pissing off everybody.

I'm not sure here. He was arguing for his father & coffin to be board onboard the plane, but they didn't show the outcome. I assumed they didn't let him bring back the body but only the coffin....But I could (and probably am) wrong.

Great episode though

why would you bring just a coffin? and no body? creepy......

My whole impression of that scene was this...

That wasn't their crash. That wasn't his father's coffin. How would part of the plane get underground in some secret waterfall island paradise? Those dolls looked pretty old....

I am thinking that is the wreckage of the people who came to mystery island before... and the process was just cathartic to Jack, he was hallucinating and as Locke (who oddly, I found wildly attractive in that yeah, he is HOT kinda way) stated... he needed to finish what he started... he needed to make his peace with whatever it is he did, and the things that were left unsaid between he and his father.

The original looped message made it clear that people have come before them... and I think this is their 'crash'.

But, the coffin looked pretty freakin' new... so I really have no clue, just enjoying the ride....

I agree with Jadewolf, I think his father never made it on the plane. When he is talking to the ticket agent he says something about how the hearse is going to meet them at the airport and go straight to the cemetary, so he obviously would have had a coffin with him. Maybe he was forced to leave his father's body behind and took the coffin back with him?

Notice that Jin was standing in line behind Jack at the airport?

So, Boone was the water thief? Seems out of character for him. Wonder what there is in his background that we don't know yet?

OK, what did Locke see when the "thing" found him last week? And, for a wheelchair bound Initech employee, he sure seems to know a lot about wilderness survival. You don't learn all those skills watching Discovery Channel.

Oh, and since no one has started a countdown yet...

46!

(And, given my avatar caption, I have to point out that the island they are on is obviously R'leyh. Cthulhu Fthagn!)

If there is no body, there is no need for the coffin and the hearse meeting him at the airport.... They have to ship the body somehow- so why would you remove it from the coffin it was in, then ship it in another box, just so it wasn't on the plane? Or do they not ship bodies in the coffin? Just doesn't make sense..

Either the body and it's packaging (the coffin I assume) make the plane, or no body and no packaging make the plane. Unless there is something I don't know about shipping dead peope (which is in reality, true), that seems to me like someone shipping me a cat fed ex, but fedex doesn't ship live animals, so they just delivered the box the cat would have come in.

I agree that the father never made it on the plane. I can't imagine them deciding to ignore policy just because he made an impassioned speech to the counter lady. But there's no proof that the coffin Jack found was his father's, so you never know. We also don't know if the coffin was real, or just a hallucination.

That said, I *do* still think there are supernatural matters going on at the island. They're just offering us a bunch of red herrings. Note that every time we start to get closer to a supernatural possibility, the writers come back with an extremely logical explanation. It's like baiting us to expect the supernatural, then faking us out... so that when they finally DO provide something supernatural, it catches us offguard.

There were, however, two creep factors about this whole episode. First is Charlie's tattoo, which seems to be a rather obvious hint at the supernatural/dream angle. Living is easy with eyes closed. IIRC, that's a John Lennon quote. The second part of the quote is Misunderstanding what you see... almost as if it were the writers first real attempt to give us a sincere hint at the fact that the island, and/or the survivors experiences, aren't real. It almost seems a little too obvious of a hint, though.

Second is Locke's comment that he looked directly into the heart of the island, and that it was beautiful. So somehow, the big beastie is tied into the island's very existence from Locke's point of view... and he even admitted that he's not a big believer in magic or the supernatural. But if what he saw in the jungle is enough to convince him otherwise, then something is very seriously wrong with this island.

Korean Couple gets more and more interesting. The wife has this haunted look in her eyes when she looks at the boy. And the couple's interactions with one another are almost as though they've only been married for a short while. Something tells me this isn't a marriage she willingly entered into.

I liked your earlier assessment. It's not his dad's coffin. That crash isn't the same crash.

Jack seeing a coffin, an empty one at that, was further reminder of his not getting to Australia in time. Which is why he beat it up.

Just read on TVTome.com that one of the guest stars in this week's episode (Jack's Mom) was Veronica Hamel. That name sounded familiar, so a quick trip to IMDB.com shows that she was the actress who portrayed the character "Joyce Davenport", a D.A. on Hill Street Blues a long time ago. A very long time ago.

Theory:

Spoiler Alert! (highlight to read)

Jack went to med school to follow in his Dad's footsteps, but broke his Dad's heart by dropping out, or the like.

Great show, still. More interesting every week. For the record, I think the body didn't make it on the plane, since it didn't have the proper paperwork. Jack just took the coffin just to have something to bury.

Except that he IS a Doctor.

No, whatever it was that Jack did, is also what led to his dads drinking and loss of friends. His mom was being rather pointed about that.

Dad had "what it takes" to deal with failure. Then he turns into a drunk and runs away (repeatedly) to eventually die of, basically, an alcohol overdose.

Something big happened. Something that destroyed the man, and that is somehow, at least partially Jacks fault.

I'm guessing that something was medical in nature. Check out all the prescription drugs in dads hotel room. Maybe he needed surgery and Jack botched it?

Why would Jack open the coffin if he knew his dad wasn't in it? I think the body was on the plane.

scubagal - Love your interpretation of the coffin/cave scene.

However, if this turns out that it is Jack's dad's coffin.... then this might provide some insight on why Jack is seeing his dad (despite the sleep deprivation explanation already provided). Jack might be seeing his father because he failed to bury his dad in a proper cemetery and the guilt is getting to him, as he knows his father's views on failure. If the dad did NOT make it on the plane, and this really is wreckage from another crash, then Jack's dad is still in customs somewhere, which still works with this theory. Mix this in with whatever Jack did that really disappointed his dad and you've got a recipe for a huge guilt trip. Perhaps Jack viewed burying his dad in a proper way as a way of settling things between them and when that didn't happen and when things on the island started to turn sour, his guilt started to manifest itself into visions of his dad.

Hey Skittles, saw Charlie's tatoo as well and immediately thought it's most definitely a clue. Was way too blatant not to be.

Additional lyrics:

"Let me take you down
cos I'm going to Strawberry Fields
Nothing is real
and nothing to get hungabout
Strawberry Fields forever
Living is easy with eyes closed
Misunderstanding all you see
It's getting hard to be someone
But it all works out
it doesn't matter much to me"
