Tivo 4.0

I am new to this forum. I have been reading about Tivo 4.0 and would love to move to Tivo 4.0. I have a DirectTV RCA DVR80 and a RCA DVR 40. If someone could email me the instructions or a link to them, I'd be grateful.
Thanks

I don't know offhand if those are Series 1 or Series 2 boxes. Do they have USB ports on the back?

Best regards,

Dwight

The people who just had their locals added. Being in Glen Burnie, you are either getting DC or B'More and don't have to worry. If you move to Champaign, IL then you won't be able to use 4.0

OK so I've been trying to work on this for some time, I know what I have to do and why I've got to do it, but I have no idea where to start with linux. Any thoughts on a good place to learn enough of the basics to get this up and running? Will I be able to cover enough ground (with a two year old) to get this done, or do I need a deeper understanding of Linux and the Tivo OS?

any reason to replace ALL of my harddrives or can I just modify my existing drives. I was thinking I could replace one drive and just hack over the other existing drives, that way, if anything goes weird I've got 1 pristine drive that I can use to create a backup from.

The other place doesn't want you to make a profit from selling items that use their work, they don't/can't forbid anyone from giving things away... so you'll have to resort to begging someone to send you an "pre-updated" image and then you'll have to beg someone to install it for you. Good luck and share the wealth!

That would be unauthorized distribution and is not allowed under the terms of the licensing agreement. Under your "logic" I should be able give away copies of software that I buy.

OK, finished upgrade... (Dive makes more noise but hey it was $50 bucks, will get a better one for my main box)

Question
Only did 1 dtivo so far, will mrv work after 2 do a sscond one or do I have to do anything special? I did do superpath already.

wishlist
It would be cool to stream the files to my pocketPc..

easy now, just relax....

You can't give away copies of your software, but you can give away the original all you want.

I'll have to read up on their "license" again... OK, I read it, now I'm no expert but it says you can use the info given for any nonprofit and noncommercial reason you choose. It doesn't look like there are any issues with people giving away Tivos modified using their stuff and knowledge or modified software. They just won't help you out if it breaks

Now there may be issues giving out a copy of the Tivo portion of the software... I'll have to see how ptv is able to sell the software, particularly since they have no restrictions on how many machines you can install it on.

sorry, didn't mean to sidetrack this discussion, particularly since it is very helpful to everyone just diving in to this.

Please feel free to PM any sort of response to this post, lets keep this post useful

ok here's an odd question, how is it that selling software for TiVo (like PTV upgrade does) is ok but selling Hacked up images is not?

Keep in mind that I realize that had the brains in my head to do my mods myself (ok I asked a couple of people come questions) and if you don't, then you shouldn't mod.

I mean, TiVo source code is GPL right?
are the hackers actually copyrighting thier work?

While it is bad form to profit from the work of the hackers, Wasn't it equally stupid of them to not to protect their work with copyrights?

No reason to PM you.

Not sure if you're having trouble reading or are just making stuff up but what you post is not what the licensing agreement says.

PTV upgrade has tivo's permission to sell images, I guess they don't have tivo's permission to sell hacked images. Some of tivo's source code is GPL but much of it isn't.

Yes, some of the hackers have a copyright on their hacks/scripts. They got tired of other getting money and/or glory at their expense.

PTV offers killhdinitrd kernels for FREE. These kernels are also on the $5 ISO's. The creator of killhdinitrd and the owner of PTVUpgrade came to an agreement where PTV is the 'sole' distributor of these hacked kernels. But as with any of these hacks, you can apply killhdinitrd to a kernel yourself and skip the middleman.

thanks for that info
I wan't sure what the history of the TiVo hacking community was.
Glad to see folks profitting from thier hard work.

nope, I can read just fine. I picked up the usage from not only reading the one post but reading faqs, etc. I wasn't trying to offend, just discuss... unclench, lose the hostility, and feel free to NOT respond to this.

now, if I save one pristine drive can I just hack over the top of the other existing drives, or is that asking for trouble?

edit: looks like they really don't like others giving things away particularly on file sharing.

This thread is interesting. I have a RCA DVR40 and a couple questions. I also have a standalone with a Dish 301 receiver I get a few channel alacart on Dish network. After 4.0 is installed would I be able to copy programs from the DVR40 to the standalone tivo? Then hopefully after I get 7.1 on the standalone I could then move the file to my pc? If this is possible I will definately want to upgrade the DVR40.

Also what is RID? And which receivers are RID? IS my DVR 40?

Jim

I see from your edit you understand your earlier posts were incorrect. Correcting someone who is posting wrong information is not being hostile. Continuing to maintain a licensing agreement says something that it doesn't is not very helpful. I honestly didn't know if you had trouble reading the agreement or were just trying to spread incorrect information.

Go to this page:

http://www.directv.com/DTVAPP/see/L...els_markets.dsp

If your town has two asterisks behind it like mine does Evansville, IN** then it's likely running on the 72.5 sat. The two asterisks lead to the disclaimer at the bottom of the page that states:

**Receipt of local channels in these markets requires the use of a second 18-inch DIRECTV Dish.
