The Toronto Star weighs in, in an article about all the latest in Reality TV:

http://www.thestar.com/NASApp/cs/Co...id=970599119419

Quote:
Of course, like every reality trend that has preceded it, Me TV has sub-mutated into several genre hybrids.

How else to explain William Shatner's latest exercise in broad self-parody, Spike TV's Invasion Iowa, in which the erstwhile starship captain descends upon the unsuspecting residents of smalltown Riverside, Iowa, self-proclaimed future birthplace of Captain James T. Kirk, and cons the entire town into thinking he's there to direct and star in a Star Trek movie.

It is, on the one hand, a natural extension of Spike's ingenious faux reality prank show, Joe Schmo. On the other hand, it could be perceived as more than just a little mean.

Though not according to Shatner. "This show has such humanity to it. There is laughter, and there are tears here. This isn't just a simple `we fooled you' show. There's a great deal of life going on, and all you can go by are your own instincts. I haven't seen any film, really. I only experienced what I did in front of the camera with all of those people, and it was so delightful and so meaningful and so ... there were tears. There were people who revealed themselves on camera ... human things happened that I think will set this show apart."

As, no doubt, will the giant rubber alien brandishing a death-ray on the outskirts of town.

Yes, there was suspicion by the end. Only a few folks, but it was definitely there.

Funny guy.

http://www.azcentral.com/ent/tv/art...oodyblog17.html

Quote:
"We didn't really dash their dreams," Shatner explained. "They're on national television from Tuesday to Friday. So although it isn't a motion picture, many of my motion pictures didn't last that long."

Asked if he was worried that a string of cartoonish roles might make viewers wonder if the real Shatner were cartoonish, he said, "He very well might be."

Shatner, as you can see, has a self-deprecating streak that defuses almost any situation. Also, he's kind of a nut. The people who participated in the movie/show, for instance, were paid, and many used the dough to make various dreams come true. But others didn't, and besides, isn't this just buying them off after tricking them?

"We gave them money to satisfy their dream," Shatner said. "And if their dream was not to satisfy their dream and hold on to the money, then that's their dream."

Star Jones asked Wayne Newton about his upcoming reality TV show, "The Entertainer," during the Golden Globes Red Carpet interview. However, I was disappointed that neither Ms. Jones nor Lisa Ling mentioned "Invasion Iowa" when they separately interviewed William Shatner.

Fortunately, seeing Phoebe Cates made up for some of the disappointment.

Darned dialup. If I could just get something faster just for the Reese/Wernick previews, I would.

YAY! Thanks for catching it, Fool Me Twice!

Unfortunately, it would have to be embedded Windows Media Player. Sigh. This laptop has an issue I haven't been able to resolve, it won't play streaming WMP files that are embedded in Web pages. And I can't fish a non-embedded URL out of it.

I went downstairs and watched it on the desktop.

Good stuff!!!!

Dang it... couldn't get FF to recognize it (even though I've got WMP10). When I tried to get IE to play it... it would open and then immediately close the window.

<sigh>

I'm on dial-up and it took a lot of work for me to get that (22.9MB!) file downloaded so that I could actually watch it.

I used the free version of WMRecorder to grab the url. Then finally found a free stream recorder that would download the clip (I tried three). The one that finally worked is called GetASFStream and it's Japanese, so it took a little guessing to get it working right.

WMRecorder was downloading it fine, but the free version only downloads for two minutes. If I wasn't so cheap (or if I was willing to look around for a pirated version) the whole process would have been a lot easier.

Spike really needs to make smaller clips available.

My problem with it isn't the size, as I have broadband...it's that long-time problem I've been trying to solve. No embedded WMP streaming audio or video works on this laptop. If I try, it hangs at "Connecting to media..." and pops out. If I get the URL and can put it directly into the standalone version of WMP, it works. Go figure.

This is not a problem specific to this clip or even the Spike site...it's a universal problem no one has been able to figure out. (If you've got an idea, feel free to answer my SOAK message in Happy Hour...no one's done it yet )

For those of you having a hard time playing the video, try this:

Open Windows Media Player. Go to File... Open URL...

Right click here and choose Copy Link Location (FireFox) or Copy Shortcut (IE)

Go back to WMP and paste in the URL you just copied.

Click OK.

Idea-maybe someone could show up at my house and do a dramatic reinactment.

Or in Shatner's case, a melodramatic reenactment.

For those who are stuck with dial-up, here are eight severely compressed clips from the preview video.

They are not actually text files. I put the .txt extension on them so that I could upload them.

Edit: You can play the first clip as-is if you open it in Windows Media Player. To see the rest you will have to join them all into one big file using the batch file I included.

Right-click on the attachments and choose Save-Target-As and download.

Here's clip one:
Attached Files
File Type: txt iowa.1.txt (97.7 KB, 29 views)

For the Batch file open a text file and name it iowa.bat

Copy and paste the following text into it:

Quote:
@ECHO OFF
Copy /b "iowa[1].1.txt" + "iowa[1].2.txt" + "iowa[1].3.txt" + "iowa[1].4.txt" + "iowa[1].5.txt" + "iowa[1].6.txt" + "iowa[1].7.txt" + "iowa[1].8.txt" "iowa.wmv"
@ECHO iowa.wmv has been recreated for you.

Save it.
Run it.

If your files are named like "iowa.1.txt" instead of "iowa[1].1.txt" use
the following batch file instead:

Quote:
@ECHO OFF
Copy /b "iowa.1.txt" + "iowa.2.txt" + "iowa.3.txt" + "iowa.4.txt" + "iowa.5.txt" + "iowa.6.txt" + "iowa.7.txt" + "iowa.8.txt" "iowa.wmv"
@ECHO iowa.wmv has been recreated for you.

Yes, my reference to Ingrid in Iowa was a joke...as far as I know, Ms. Wiese wasn't there. (As far as I know, she isn't logging in here, either, or I'd ask ) But she apparently has a doppleganger or two!

Every show should have an Ingrid. And I mean that in an "interesting and intellitgent person" kind of way, and not in the "gives producers daily heart attacks" kinda way.

Darn it, Inundated. You got your link to work. I never did.
