Big Grin Hot Time, Summer in Kansas City - July 22-24

Discussion about a middle-of-the-country meet has bounced around in this forum, in the Happy Hour, and in PMs - there appears to be plenty of interest, so let start gettin' this thing put together.

Hot Time, Summer in Kansas City
July 22-24 in Kansas City

Possible daytime activities: Jazz Museum, Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art (great Egyptian and Chinese collections), Country Club Plaza (very cool outdoor shopping area)
Evening Activites: BBQ at my place or dansee's place, Jazz clubs (the Blue Room, the Phoenix, Jardine's, etc.). If Ed is interested, I may have an in at Jardine's (a buddy of mine is their lawyer) and if they aren't already booked I might be able to get him a gig.
The Royals are in town and play Friday and Saturday nights or Sunday during the day. Unfortunately for us fans, getting tickets isn't much of a problem - but it is a beautiful stadium and prices are reasonable.

I've got lots of extra room here, and would be happy to offer space for people to crash. There's a guest room with a Queen-sized bed in it. There's also another extra bedroom that's completely empty at this point (but carpeted). There's a good-sized basement if folks are interested in crashing slumber-party style with the DLP (and a very comfy couch for sleeping). There are a couple more couches in the Great Room that are sleep-able and one in my daughter's playroom that is a Queen-sized sofa sleeper. I suspect Dansee's got some spare room as well, and even zaknafein may have some space (though he just downsized to an apartment recently).

So who's interested? Post here and we'll get the planning ball rolling.
Remember:
Round Trip flights from Chicago-KC can be had for $150 or less if you catch a sale (or you can drive it in about 9 hours).
You can drive Dallas to KC in about 8 hours (flights are about $260)
Round Trip flights from NYC are under $250 on AirTran
Round Trip flights from Jacksonville, FL are under $200 (Orlando is more expensive)
If folks from L.A. stay until Monday, there is a $253 non-stop on Midwest available.

So what are you waiting for?

Transplanted here from page 3 of this thread:
Here's the early list of attendees, as near as I can tell. I've divided the list into "Likely" and "Maybe" for now.

Likely: AJRitz, dansee, Inundated, zaknafein, Hippster, rhuntington3, Maui, pendragn, Graymalkin, ireland967, Francesco., DavidPlatt, emily, LUVmyTIVOinKC & tstowell (depending on the arrival of their respective children).

Maybe: edhara, Ereth, Skittles, whitson77, jwjody, AngryPuppy, SueAnn

I'll update the list as people let me know. Minor update - people who are "committed" (offered housing, made reservations, etc.) are now listed in green.

I'm in. Since I live on the Plaza now, I'm up for helping any way I can.

I've also got an extra bed, so, if anyone coming from out of town wants to crash at my apartment, they're welcome.

I have a partial Royals season ticket plan. If we want to do a ballgame, I can give my rep a call and see what he can do.

$60 fun fares from Chicago to KC on Southwest make this pretty tempting. I'll give it some thought and decide soon, since the fares may not be available forever.

I could be in for this possibly (although it is on a Family members birthday so I can't say for sure). It is easily driving distance for me.

Ed - I'm serious about seeing if I can get you a gig while you're here, if you're interested. If we get you a gig booked, you could deduct the price of the trip on your taxes

Dang Wright Amendment! I can get from Dallas Love Field to Little Rock or Jackson but I can't get to Kansas City. I'll have to drive or go from DFW for around $260 on American.

Aren't there two Kansas Cities? One in Missouri and one in Kansas?

Which one is this in? I guess a more relevant question is: which airport code is most convenient?

Kansas City, Kansas doesn't have it's own airport. The only confusing part is that the airport that we Kansas Citians all refer to as "Kansas City International" has the airport abbreviation MCI, because its OFFICIAL name is "Mid-Continent International".

Much of the fun activities for the weekend, as well as zaknafein and dansee, are on the Missouri side of the state line. I live on the Kansas side of the state line now, as do SWFan and tstowell.

My house is smaller, less fancy, and more "suburban 50s" than AJRitz's place, but I have a spare bedroom, currently with a single. There will likely be a queen available as well, if I get motivated with the downstairs remodeling, and I'm pondering putting another single in the office.

Also, like AJ, there's a rec room in the basement with a big screen, a sleep-able sofa, etc. So, for those who need it, there should be plenty of free lodging. For those with early flights, or tough schedules, I'm almost next door to the airport, too.

Oh, and it goes without saying that both AJRitz and I have smokin' fast wireless available.

Talk about your self-answering questions....

And actually, there is a very convenient downtown airport, if you want to come in your executive jet, Ereth.

Heck, from my house it would be faster to pick him up at Johnson County Executive Airport than the downtown KCMO airport.

KCK is tiny. Most of us just pretend it doesn't exist.

Now, now zak. KCK has at least five claims to fame now:
1. A NASCAR track
2. The most corrupt politics west of Chicago
3. A really big outdoors store (Cabela's)
4. More people on public assistance than contributing to the tax base (Note: This may no longer be true, since they've annexed so much of the property to the West, but it was definitely true a few years ago).
5. A really big furniture store (Nebraska Furniture Mart)

That's not a furniture store, it's the abyss. My God, it makes most shopping malls look tiny. Hell... it makes most small cities look tiny. It's capitalism run amok.

I love it.

Yup. He also now owns the largest realtor in town, ReeceNichols. First, he owned J.D. Reece. Then, he bought JC Nichols. Then, he merged them so he wouldn't have to compete with himself.

I might be. I need to check my schedules and see if anything conflicts. So the airport that I need to look at is MCI?

Yes. You should be fine searching for either MCI or Kansas City MO.
